People crossing the road at junctions

when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way
I find that a bizarre rule without any clarity!
So what if you are travelling along at 40 mph or the traffic light is green? It would be acceptable if the rule stated that it only applied in 30 mph zones and you should only give way in certain circumstances.
The new rule does not specify what type of junction, what is classed as a junction?

There is clarity if you choose to read all the recent changes and not pick and choose a part of them.

Some seem more willing to cross and some not.I guess it will take a lot of vehicles giving way before things settle down. Have you noticed any difference?0

perhaps if some people made up their mind things might improve. You know what I mean - you see them start to cross - you slow down and then they stop and dash back only to stop and start again and dash back a second time - I try to be considerate but my wife complains at my rants

I think you're misunderstanding the rule. It's aimed at pedestrians waiting to cross a road that you're wanting to turn into, not the main road that you're currently on. Also, you should also be wary of any pedestrian near a pedestrian crossing, regardless of the colour of the light and be prepared to stop.sevenhills said:when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give wayI find that a bizarre rule without any clarity! So what if you are travelling along at 40 mph or the traffic light is green? I think a lot of this could be resolved with using common sense. Sadly many don't have it.When I approach as a pedestrian, i don't care what the new rule says - i'm on foot & if a car connects with me then i'm hurt so I wait for clear path. I let the cars go all day & if the driver signals me to walk then I still check around to see if anyone else is about to turn in where i'm crossing before i cross. When i approach as a driver I slow down if there's people because i realise there's people who are idiots & who will cross without looking, who will move from a stroll to a dash in an instant, who will cross with their heads buried in their phones & earphones in. I go steady because I know even if it's the idiots fault for not being observant & they get what they deserve for being an idiot, the finger will be pointed at me because i'm a driver.Wife had one of these 'everyone gives way for me' folk last week. Not even at a junction. Walking up the pavement & next minute they just randomly cross without looking, right in front of her causing her to slam on. Still didn't look up. I thought perhaps she didn't see it or something so we looked it back on dash cam & sure enough this person was walking along & randomly just walked out right in front of my wife. There was another case here about a week after that rule change came in. Kid just walked out in front of a car because the word being put about is cars have to stop for pedestrians regardless of anything at any time or any place. So this kid plays the big I AM & finds out the hard way that you shouldn't play with traffic.7

If only the Highway Code provided some sort of helpful illustrations of the sort of situation they're talking about.
Oh, wait:

Drivers - watch out for pedestrians.
Pedestrians- watch out for vehicles.
It doesn't matter what the rules are, just be careful.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.2 -

It states "At a junction you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning." You don't need to give way to pedestrians if you're going straight on, just if you're turning. You're unlikely to be turning at 40 mph! It's the way it works in most of Europe, and probably most of the rest of the world, if you've walked around a foreign city you'll have probably noticed how when you get a green man to cross, turning traffic also has the green light and turns into your path, but stops and wait for you to cross.

No, but it's widely available on the internet. It might be better if it stated that where there is a dropped curb for pedestrians to cross, that is where motorists should give way, if it's appropriate to do so.
The 'junctions' rule applies whether or not there is a dropped kerb.
It does not specify what type of junctions, there are many.
It does. See various posts above..0
