Sounds like you are making real progress with the house, albeit at Mr LH's pace! You won't know yourself when you have your new carpet. I recently had some painting done and it has made such a difference - it sounds silly but I find myself just looking at it and admiring how it looks!

I know exactly what you mean. It does make such a difference.

Lovely to hear how your hallway is taking shape.

I wonder if you could go round the house into each room with a notepad and note down every single thing from new door handles to paint/paper room or new carpet, new furniture, furniture to be emptied and moved from one room to another then refilled again etc.  (Obviously ignore mr lhs room unless he has stuff to bectaken out to the tip.)  Then either talk to your friend who did the bannister or a local handyman (check age UK for their local recommendations or trusted trader or ask for recommendations from friends or library, a local mens shed will know of active retirees etc.  By having lots of little jobs it becomes a better prospect for somebody - a day's work rather than a ten minute job here and there.  You could do the same in the garden.  Often jobs don't need a particularly skilled person, another pair of hands and a younger body is often all thats required.

Doing it all fairly quickly will spruce your house up altogether and make it nice for you now rather than bits dragging on for the next 2 years.  By the time some bits have been done the first bits will be needing done again.

Its what money is for, a tool to be used to make life easier, better or more pleasant.  I'm sure your brother in law and sister would love to know a few hundred quid has improved your home life so much  😀

    Evening all

Doing up the house quickly sounds great and I would love it to happen that way but I have to wait for Mr LH to get his a*** in gear which happens very slowly. I can only push him so far or he resists and then nothing happens. As happened with the windows. He started a small job today, decided he hadnt got the right tools so nothing happened. Hopefully tomorrw will be more productive but probably not as we have to go and get what he needs and by then he will  have lost interest. As the job will be noisy the weekend is out or we will disturb the neighbours despite the fact they will almost certainly be out and so it goes on.

Every room needs fairly major work doing so it has to be one room at a time. The next room will be the kitchen but I dont want that starting until after Christmas so everything is at a standstill unti then. I dont fancy cooking Christmas dinner in half a kitchen or even the van.

One load of washing done and when that is dry there will be the dreaded ironing in a couple of days.

    lounge hoovered.

No money spent. The next transfer to my new account done so I am almost up to the amount I want to put in there which will be done tomorrow.

Had the utility statement for the month and that has come in less than expecteddespite Mr LH putting the heating on.

Thats about it for today. Have a good evening.

That was why i wondered if getting paid help in would be better for you, for him and for your relationship?   That way the person can just crack on and you both can enjoy living your life with your various hobbies?

Are you sure its not as well getting other rooms done before the kitchen?  You could get a lot done with a fortnight's paid help and still be finished before December even starts ?

Just a thought, you know what you want done and why it has to be in a particular order  :)

    Night, dxx

Everything will be done by tradesmen but there is always bits to do when the main job has ended. Putting pictures back up, handles on doors etc. If I could find a decent odd job man to do these things it would be great but they are in short supply round here.

The main reason for not having anything else done before Christmas is the lead time to get trades people here to actually do the job. The hall etc decorating was originally scheduled for Dec 1st but he had a cancellation and ou job happened to be the right amount to fill the time and we could have him at short notice.
