@jwil A really good suggestion about second-hand books. I think that it’s such a pity that a lot of small book stores have closed and nobody wants them any more. We had a small local and quaint book store in our town which sadly closed a few years ago, as Waterstones had opened, took much of their business away and they couldn’t afford the business rates any more. Such a loss to the town. Alas, even some charity shops don’t accept books any more. Such a pity, and unless you have a rarity or first edition, sadly books don’t sell anymore.
@ladyholly I hope things settle down with your problem neighbour and that he leaves you alone. He sounds a really nasty piece of work.2 -
Evening allWe used to have an antiquarian bookshop in the town and also a second hand book shop for the more ordinary books - if any book can be described as ordinary. Sadly both have closed sp we will bring home those that are not falling apart ( many are from the late 19th early 20th century but have suffered fromn when the house had no heating and was somewhat damp. In case I havent mentioned it bils house was built by his grandfather and has been in the family ever since. In some ways I will be sorry to sell it but it is a large house and I am not up to carrying out the updating it badly needs and I would relly struggle to keep it clean plus I dont fancy paying the council tax on an E band house.A very lazy day yesterday but it bit more productive today. I started off by printing out a very long form from the solicitor only to have the printer jam on the last page. I couldnt see an immediate fix so thought I would leave it for mr LH to sort. It has been on its last legs for some time and it took about 45 minutes to print the form. I got a taxi and popped round to dd and used her printer and got a lift home with sil which saved another taxi fare. It was nice to see them and we had a good natter. When I got home I actually managed to get in the garden and move some pots around as the new storage box is in a different place. A tiny bit of weeding done and I finished moving the bricks the old box was on. Hopefully some more will get done tomorrow depending on the weather. It has been showery today but managed to ddo what I wanted to between times.Lounge and conservatory hoovered and that was me done for the day. I have another Scott Mariani book on the go so will go and carry on with that.Have a nice evening and for those with wine enjoy.3

The only other thing I can think of with the books is the books exchange type places at stations or the little free community book cupboards you sometimes see. Although your bil's books might not be suitable for that.Sounds like a pragmatic decision about the house albeit sad that it will be leaving the family ownership.2

Most of the books will probably end up with my local hospice charity shop. Even if they aren't saleable they sell them for recycling. I will try selling them first thou.
When we all go down to start clearing the house our conservatory will look like a storage unit for a while. I will gradually find places for as much as possible in the rest of the house before selling most of it.3 -
Evening allA quiet day yesterday as I knew it wouldn't be today but did do two loads of washing.Out early today to post a couple of parcels and yet another form to the solicitor. The printer is well and truly jammed still as Mr LH hasnt done anything with it and as far as I am concerned it needs replacing anyway as it is not printing properly which is one reason I havent looked at it. The second reason is Mr LH does little enough so technical things are passed to him.Bear had a lovely time in the secure field yoday but we did cut it slightly short as it is very warm here and he is a black dog. I do get the impression that he is starting to get the idea of recall but his terrier ears often stop him from hearing us calling him,
He has been flat out for nuch of the afternoon.
After getting home we loaded the car with the old storage box and some other stuff and had a trip to the tip. We know how to live! The excitement was overwhelming - not. There was loads of post today including one from British gas and one from the alarm company complaining we havent paid the bill. Having spent ages on the phone to BG and a letter to the alarm co. telling them to send all bills to the solicitor I am somewhat irritated. Both companies are well aware of the situation and I really dont want to keep being hassled. There was also a letter from the care line company telling me they had received the equiment for the personal alrm system which I sent to them about three weeks ago. Its nice that they let me know so fast considering they were quite rude on the phone telling me I had to return it quickly.I now have to phone or write to BG and the alarm company to reiterate that bills should be sent to the solicitor not me and pass on the ones they have sent.I think thats enough moans for the day. Have a good evening.5 -
Evening allA generally good day today. Posted a sale from last nightthis morning and weekly shop this afternoon.Mr LH has swapped our printer for bils so hopefully it will work for a while. This will make printing out endless forms from the solicitor easier. Email from said solicitor - he had a letter from HMRC with a letter in it that he needed for one of the complications of bils etstate but no letter in it. Fortunately when he rang he found a helpful person (there are some) who emailed the required letter. It did make me laugh though.A fairly peaceful afternoon after shopping finishing a book and I have just started the first Strike book. I have never read any of these but several people have reccommended them so looking forward it.The bad thing for today is the alarm company for bils house are being a pain in the ****. A strong letter will be dispatched very soon.. Mr LH used to work inthe security industry on the technical side and said this company were useless then and apparently havent changed in the intervening 25 years. If bil had sought his advice he would have warned him off them but we cant change it so will have to tolerate them.Have a lovely eveing now the better weather is here.3

I've enjoyed all the 'Strike' novels.

I love the Strike books too. The TV series is a good adaptation as well.
Frustrating about the alarm company."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee1 -
Another fan of the Strike books and I agree the tv adaptation is very good. I'm looking forward to the next book being published as there was a real cliffhanger moment at the end of the last one!
Such hard work for you ploughing through all the admin. Why is it that some organisations are efficient and helpful and others are the exact opposite?2 -
Evening allOnce again good news and bad. The good news first I rang bils creit card cmpany and despite the two month gap since he died (I thought the solicitor had informed them - he hadnt) and they were amazing. Helpful, efficient and quite happy to talk to the solicitor. Another tick on list. The bad bit is his electric car. It has a leased battery and the company says I can assign the the battery to someone else or buy the battery for £2000. I dont want the car and am not allowed to drive anyway. Assigning the lease is unlikely as this model is seriously devaluing even with an owned battery. If someone was to take on the lease they would obviously want to see the car before purchase which would involve a trip , possibly several for them to see it. We cant get it here as it has a very limited range and to trailer it would be very expensive. I have explained the problems to the lease company and explained I dont drive, am over 70 and disabled with a car that is over 3 hours away. I dont suppose it will do any good but I can only try. Anone in the Southampton/ Portsmouth area want a limited mileage ev with a leased battery for £1?
Buying the lease sounds ok but I doubt we would get our money back judging by the sold prices we have seen.
On other stuff I have done something to my back turning over in bed last night. Brufen is my friend. No money spent - hooray.Lots of bils paperwork shredded. I really dont think I need gas bills from 2015 not to mention all the other stuff. It is all now in a smallish box in my wardrobe. I am trying to make some space for the load that will be coming home next week.I was hoping the stair lift company would be in touch about removing it but nothing yet so it looks as though it will be a special trip when they come.Feeling stressed and somewhat down tonight it seems as soon as I sort something out another problem rears its head. Mr LH is getting depressed again so I am having to hide how I feel or he will get even worse and we have been down that road before.I havent got far with the Strke book but am enjoying it so far so off to lose myself in fiction. It is preferable to real life at present.I hope your evening is good.3
