Gosh that’s awful Watty ☹️
Well a morning spent drinking tea and doing the money shuffle as dh did get paid for this month. I had a little over from the girls trip last week as I really didn’t spend much at all, so I’ve managed to put away the £300 for the York October trip as well as pay off an extra £222.67 off the March cruise, leaving a balance of £625.83 left to pay.Although it feels a bit pointless with such huge amount to needing covering for non essential things I think I’m going to revive my old end of year challenge I used to like to do 😬 it used to be Oct- Dec and was if I recall correctly usually set at £1000 for everything except bills. I’ve not done this for a fair few years now though. I think I’ll maybe do a sept- nov challenge instead as it would be nicer to have more give in December for obvious reasons 🎄and I shan’t include the £300 York trip either. So from the 1st sept I’m going attempt to spend £1000 for everything for the next three months, got to be worth a go and it’s a two fold benefit as I might save a little bit to overpay extra but more importantly it will rein me in with buying stuff 😃MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁7 -
Oops lost a post as I got distracted and it vanished! Yesterdays day of rest didn’t happen as dh came home early so we went to visit the in-laws, well mil, as fil was in bed. It’s very frustrating as dh sorted lots of aids to be delivered by social services, they let them deliver them then rang and insisted they are all removed and taken away again, it turns out it’s the second time in a year they have done this 😡 Fil and dodgy brother are very much in charge and our hands are pretty much tied, both are how can I put it - misers and skin flints, not the definition of what I’d call frugal but something else, the lack in engagement with getting help is all driven by a fear of being expected to pay towards it. Dodgy brother is more than happy with this line of thinking 😒 we are trying to get through that if you need help and have the money then pay for it, but it goes against a lifetime of behaviour.Ironically mil has given us £150 to spend on going out for our anniversary as we were leaving, I tried to give it back but she insisted so we will take it to York when we go and I’ll pop over the same from the York pot to pay £150 off the cruise balance.Today dh is at work again and I’m popping round my parents first thing for a coffee then at 12 I’ve been invited round ds2’s for the long awaited for end to the Chucky season we were watching, we waited to finish it when his new sofa came and that was a few days ago 😬 I need to stop off and get a few bits to eat while we watch so might nip to @ldis and get some cheese, crackers, tomatoes etc. to have. Sundays don’t get better than cheese and Chucky 🤣MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁5

Take the money gratefully and without guilt NG - from what you’ve said above and in the past, the in-laws are not exactly the nicest people and clearly don’t appreciate you!
Enjoy your cheese and crackers later - I have a yen for a cheese and crackers night soon (maybe it’s a seasons thing?) but we’re having dirty rice this evening, inspired by Greying.Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

I love the distinction of miserly and skinflint as opposed to frugal. I'd never really thought about it before but yes, that really is a thing. I live a frugal life (in as much as anyone with an old building and 3 horses can) but there is such a difference between that and miserly.
Enjoy the cheese and crackers. Always a delightful end of the week plan.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Thank you Vix 😊
Hi Watty, I think for me a good example is we have the heating off as it’s just us, fil had the heating off and the lights out everywhere at all times including even Xmas day when the kids were little and we visited and he shouted at mil to turn off the light if I put it on on to get upstairs 😱
Hi jessy, if you liked the films you are in for a big treat! It’s by Don Mancini like the films with most of the original actors which is very unusual for a tv adaptation, enjoy! 😬MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁6 -
Glad you got the £150 to help towards the York trip. Hopefully you can get the unit rented out asap.DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Thanks Lady 🙂
Day one today, I trawled through my old
diary last night and it seems I did have a budget of £1k for three months when I previously
did the challenge years ago. No kids at home now, but higher prices and I’m out more as I’m
not working so maybe more coffees 😆 I’m starting to think this will be harder than it used to be .
Today is dh’s birthday but he’s sorting the factory all week so I’ll do him a spag Bol for dinner. His gift is being delivered while I’m out which is a bit risky but it’s a bracelet from the shop he likes in Amsterdam so hopefully will fit though the letter box.
I’m kicking off the spending with a trip to hom3 b@rgains to get toiletries as their s1mple shower gel is way cheaper than anywhere else, plus I saw a nice autumn mug for dil for her birthday to go with the coffee pod machine I’ve got her (birthday pot funded).MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁7 -
Spending diary time, today I’ve kicked off with lots of it 😆
£4.96 on reduced posh cheeseboard for dhs birthday today for him
£14 cat food
£5.50 on battery tealights for autumn
£6.91 toiletries and a box of crackers for dh for the cheese
£20 tcb tesc0 gift card - £5 cashback earned 😃
Total spent:£ 51.37 /£1000 challenge, but £20 still on the gift card for foodAll the kids popped in to visit tonight, I felt a bit tight as I bought dh a small cake as I thought he would be working later and wouldn’t see them today, still they had a little bit 😆
Unfortunately his mum rang tonight and said fil has fallen down the stairs and is in hospital 😩 his little brother is there now so he will probably go tomorrow as it’s quite far and he’s exhausted after scrapping glue of the factory floor all day and painting. Hopefully it’s not really serious, he’s
being rude to the nurses so I guess that’s a good sign for him at least. I hope they keep him in a bit and give him a good check over, he’s refused the gp for a couple of years now.MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁7
