I think you're right @maman with regards to the cookery book 😂 As for more budget meals, off the top of my head I'd say veggie chilli / goulash (basically anything with beans in it rather than meat, or a mushroom bolognese where you basically chop mushrooms up really small and then cook with tomato puree and herbs and it's almost like meat but nicer than quorn IMO. Chickpea curry is a good one here (chickpeas, frozen peppers, half an onion and 1/4 tin of light coconut milk with some curry powder and veg stock). I really like Jack Monroe, Miguel Barclay, Budget Bytes and Beat the Budget for cheaper / costed out recipes.Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 20171

It was just another half pound off again this week - it's definitely coming off really slowly! I've booked 2 weeks off from group even though we're only going away for a week in the hope that I can shift anything I put on so that I'm at least the same weight I am now! Just hope it works!
I'd recommend Jack Monroe recipes too @maman (www.cookingonabootstrap.com). I often make the mixed bean goulash (I used Waitrose dried mixed beans which has 10 different beans in it!) although if I can't get to Waitrose to get them then I'll just use a tin of mixed beans - Jack Monroe uses a tin of kidney beans plus a tin of baked beans with the tomato sauce washed off but that really doesn't appeal to me!
The veggie burgers (called 9p burger on the website which is how much they cost to make when she first made them but obviously a bit dearer now).
One of my other cheap meals is the chicken and chorizo risotto which I use about 50g of chorizo which I keep frozen plus a handful of bits of chicken LO from a roast dinner.
I also like a butternut squash and chickpea curry which works out really cheap especially if you use dried chickpeas. I always add some frozen spinach at the end - in fact I usually stir through some spinach whenever I make curries.
There are quite a lot of cheap recipes on the Old Style board on the Grocery challenge although not many of them are SW friendly although there is a section for SW recipes which were added by Mrs Macawber who used to post on here a long time ago.

Hi all,
I’m on the train heading home. Good day in that I labelled up all the boxes and crates and transferred onto cages. Couriered some bits home to folk and have 3 orchids in a bag which I couldn’t bear to leave. I also snaffled some stationery for the home office.Food was all on plan. Got the tuna Niçoise salad with olives but left the dressing. Had the foresight to bring in my own fork as the bamboo ones are useless!
Got some brioche burger buns for DH and DS2 to have with their burgers. I will have mine plain with Cajun wedges and salad.Have taken some cold and flu caps as still feeling like a cold is coming. Scratchy throat etc. Good news is that I don’t need to go into the office tomorrow. Think the boss felt sorry for me as I found a maggoty egg under a load of detritus in the corner of the office - gross!Cross-stitch WIP: Fiver Friday challenge 2025 founding member 😊 Read 25 books in 2025 11/25 Currently reading The Cliff House by Amanda Jennings0 -

Thanks @bubbs.
I'm sure your dad will be fine with the stoma, the stoma nurses are brilliant. My friend has had a stoma since she was in her early 40s, so about 20 years now. The nurses are always on the end of the phone. You're right about he will have to be able to do it.
You don't seem to be eating very much at the moment. I know you're worried about your parents, particularly your dad but you really need to look after yourself and that includes eating properly.

I couldn't eat much as it was coming straight out 😱 my tummy has settled but i just feel really nervous and jittery, which is not like me. I am not hungry but have a good tea, not had it yet as dh is painting the decking a bit at a time after work, but it's on nowSealed pot challenge number 003 £350 for 2015, 2016 £400 Actual£345, £400 for 2017 Actual £500:T:T £770 for 2018 £1295 for 2019:j:j spc number 22 £1,457Stopped Smoking 22/01/15:D:D::dance::dance:- 5 st 1 1/2lb :dance:0 -
Well done on your loss @joedenise. It's slow but it is coming off.👏👏👏
As you said @bubbs, your dad needs the surgery. I'm sure he'll give it his best and the nurses will help. Not easy for any of you though. 🤗
Thanks all for the recipe ideas. I'm going to take a look at them all. I already do a good veggie chilli which we both enjoy. I think it's mainly a case of rethinking my meal plans. It's too easy to just go for the same things. I have used baked beans as they're only white beans really and you don't taste any remaining sauce with the chilli spices. I'd love to come over and try your macaroni cheese @beanielou. 😉
I remember Mrs Micawber, IIRC her DH was in the military. 🤔1 -
That's the one @maman. I loved reading her thread with all the recipes. She stopped posting when she had a baby. She did start another thread when he was a baby but I think she ended up running out of time so stopped shortly after. I've got a few of her recipes in my file which I use from time to time.
You can macaroni cheese as loose or as firm as you want it really; it's just the balance between pasta and sauce really.
The other recipe I was thinking about was the mushroom stroganoff which is fairly cheap especially if you can get some YS mushrooms!

Sorry @joedenise we cross-posted. Well done on your loss 😊
All good wishes to your dad for tomorrow @bubbs x
My consultant is leaving due to ill health so somebody new from Saturday. Shame as she was a hoot! I’m going on Saturday but then have 3 weeks off as walking the Great Glen Way followed by the West Highland Way. Lord knows what I’ll find to eat en route!Cross-stitch WIP: Fiver Friday challenge 2025 founding member 😊 Read 25 books in 2025 11/25 Currently reading The Cliff House by Amanda Jennings1
