Ooooh, always associate choux pastry swans with Fanny Craddock....used to love watching her and Johnny as a child, so eccentric and a bit loopy!!goldfinches said:
I quite fancy a crack a making the swans once I've mastered choux pastry so watch this space! There are some really clever suggestions for various nibbles and delicious treats in the book and the more I look at the recipes the more I'm inspired so it was really worth buying. I've just got to make a space in my bookcase for it now.Frith said:Oh, there they are!
We hardly made anything from that book, we just liked looking at the pictures! I remember the pinwheel sandwiches and choux pastry swans as well.7

I discovered a new treasure trove of kitchen kit and all sorts of other wonderful things today after finally managing to cycle to a hospice shop in a far flung suburb. I hadn't realised that the shop, photos here, is at least double if not triple the depth you expect looking at it from outside. They had whole plastic crates full of Pyrex and all sorts of delights. I bought these three items and have promised myself to make the trip at least fortnightly from now on even though, rather embarrassingly, a jogger who wasn't really trying overtook me easily as I was puffing along the river path.
The dish on the right is a JAJ 9" diameter and the one on the left is Pyrex 10" diameter deep fill with the fluting."She could squeeze a nickel until the buffalo pooped."

Whereas we got the cream horn moulds from a military surplus warehouse. Ye gods, what an afternoon of fluffy pastry, cream, jam, & frankly couldn't eat another that was! Must ask youngest where they are now so we can feed up lady mother a bit. (Being widowed is still a nasty shock to her. I'm 2 months down the line & much less refined in my sensibilities.)
Crates of Pyrex?! Eyes youngest thoughtfully - if we had Still More pie dishes, we could batch cook even more efficiently, just an @goldfinches "far flung suburb" probably isn't within 2 hours of Lancashire....7

I did leave behind a Mason Cash fluted pie dish as the colour inside and outside around the rim wasn't to my taste and the shop is very near the Littlemore roundabout on the eastern bypass so it might be nearer than you think. There was also a wonderful blue tagine that I regretfully decided wasn't for me as well as a whole table of new pairs of jeans in every shade of indigo for both men and women. I think I shall have to adopt the 'one in one out' approach from now on though as I've too much kit as it is.DigForVictory said:Whereas we got the cream horn moulds from a military surplus warehouse. @goldfinches I told you a while back that shop was a little goldmine! I don’t get over that way very often, but I have never been disappointed whenever I visit.

I went out today with only £10 in my purse and I wanted a big tea cup, a fleece top and a scarf. I only found two scarves and not the rest. One scarf was pale pink and one was white with a blue pattern. They weren't the very warm type though but I can use them for layering over a polo neck.
I did see an XL fleece top for only £1, but the pattern was so hideous I didn't even want to wear it inside the house! It was beige, brown and grey as well. Yuck!
I also saw an orange and white cushion (chevron pattern) which will go very well in my living room as I just decorated with orange decorations and sunflowers for autumn. I got that and quite a smart black and white zip up top for my husband. Also a silver dog bowl. Oh yes, two pretty "silver" bracelets. Oh and a navy Primark sweatshirt. That all came to £8.50 and all from the Leigh-on-sea Cornerstone store again.:)2025 GOALS

£5 spent at Blue Cross Northallerton today: I’m especially pleased with the bread book which I used to have and lent out. I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40) I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
