My MIL had a mole problem in her last home until my wife's cat moved in with her.
When we took the cats in (in-laws went to Australia to see their daughter) the problem came back.
The problem vanished on the cat's return.
She is now retired and enjoyment limited to puddle splashing and sleeping. (Both MIL and cat).
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.

I dread to think of the carnage that would ensue if I added a cat to boxer hq.

You might be surprised, my parents Bassett Hound was a very keen hunter but indoor cats were mostly ignored. Outdoors it was game on!

I probably wouldn't risk it myself, it only takes one incident and there could be a dead cat.

Can't help with the moles, I would probably just set up camera traps and accept the bumps in the lawn as fair exchange for being able to see such an interesting animal up close.

Could a Basset actually catch a cat?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

When ever I hear "moles", and "windmills", it brings back memories of Jasper Carrot...

Thank you for that, it was very funny.  No one says “I’ve got this mole” quite like Jasper Carrott. :D

We looked at a cottage to rent in rural Devon.  There was a big scruffy lawn with lots of mole hills.  We asked the owner if the moles were paying rent.  He thought our sense of humour was wicked and offered us the place.  After looking at the price professional mole catchers charged we declined.

Yeah sounds like moles. Rat holes can be dug anywhere. In the lawn, borders, especially going under a fence. Rats usually run the same route so that tends to leave a track leading to a hole. If they have been using the same runs for a while or if there is lots of them you can usually smell their urine too. They also leave very wet area's in long grass, bushes etc where they use urinate. You can sometimes see the poo pellets too, but no always.
I’m not sure how much more I can take rats will be one step to far.  This is the first time I’ve lived in the countryside.  The house is old and poorly insulated so far we have had; wood lice, wasps, giant spiders, a fox that poops in the garden, slugs in the living room 😱
One of the worst things is flies.  We lived in a house on a rural Devon farm.  We could put up with any wildlife apart from the hundreds of flies

I really don’t mind lawn bumps I’m just worried my landlord will be upset.  Agency are coming around tomorrow so they can have a look.

Best to have a look at your tenancy agreement beforehand. It probably says you are responsible for keeping the garden in good order.  There won't be a get-out clause to cover an underground invasion. So, be prepared to negotiate.
