Well done Sweet1, and welcome! My best suggestion is to always make sure you eat protein with every meal, as this keeps your blood sugars stable (reducing cravings) and means that the sugars in what you're eating are released more slowly. Also, don't allow yourself to get hungry - eat approx. every 3 hours (snacks of fruit and nuts not a whole meal!); small and often. I think I'm right in saying that if you like big portions SW is the one for you; others will be along later who know more ( I just follow a low GL type plan). Good luck with the WI and whatever the scales read, don't worry - we can help you shift it.

Thanks everyone so far with your advice

My DD will be 6 on Friday, it's really funny cause i make sure that she is healthy and eats the right things yet i am neglecting myself. She does gymnastics and swimming and i make sure she has a balanced diet and not too much sweets.

I am on meds for my thyroids however i am not one for taking tablets so i will go days without taking my tablets.

I really need a good kick up the jaxsy but over the last 4/5 years i have really let my self go and the last 6 months have not been too good either as i have had a miscarraige and things between my OH hasn't been too rosey either so have just balloned up even more.

But i have decided that i need to take control in 2008, and sort things out.

I am glad i have found this site.

Sorry for going on...... really need to do some work

Happy to report a maintain today!

I had the "bug" that was going around after Christmas so I think the fact that I felt like c**p and wasn't really eating anything helped. Not really a method I would recommend though! My last weigh in was 2 weeks ago so I am quite pleased really.

Our consultant has put us all on as new starters as there are new books out at SW. They are similar to the old ones but the green is on one side and turn the book over and the red is on the other. Actually it was quite good to go through the complete book with her again. There is always something new to learn, or something you had forgotten about!

Does anyone know what agar agar is and does anyone use it? Where would I buy it as I can't ever remember seeing it in the shops!

Glad everyone seems to be getting back on track after the holidays, and big welcome to all the new members. This is a very helpful group - I have learned loads on here. I don't post very often but I read the forum every day and feel as if I know everyone here!:j

    Best wishes to all

agar agar is a vegetable alternative to gelatine!! I'm sure you would be able to get it in a health food shop, but not sure
Need to sort my life out! :T

Marion, agar agar is a gelling agent. I've never used it in cooking (it really should only be in a petri dish, that's where I've pigeon-holed it) but I think it can be used as a straight replacement for gelatine. If you couldn't find it in Holland and Barrett I'd be amazed.

Sweet1 you will get a kick up the jaxsy here. Some kick harder than others so watch them :) I'd probably agree with bails - if you do like your plate piled then SW will probably suit you better than weight watchers, as the WW points system doesn't really give shorter females many points to go at. Just cos it's free on SW though doesn't mean you can infinite amounts in practice. It would work short term, but portion size control is an issue on any plan.

On the subject of WW, if any of the newbies (or indeed the oldbies) want my WW daily points tracker (pic of it here) then just PM me with your email address or MSN addy and I'll send it. It's just an excel spreadsheet for you to put your own info into.

Hi sweet1, welcome and good luck with planning your weight loss.

This might not be a popular suggestion but what about reducing your 1-2 takeaway meals per week with 2 a month? *ducks* I stopped my occasional visits to the chippie completely and haven't been back, actually can't bear the thought of chip shop chips now.

Home workout DVDs sound like a good idea, your DD will probably enjoy joining in! I like the Gaiam range of DVDs, I'm not really into "celebrity" workouts, but that's just a personal preference. If you're saving money you could also record workout programmes off the telly instead. Or how about picking yourself up a stepper, cross trainer or exercise bike to use at home? Or a pedometer and get walking more?

Does the thyroid issue affect your exercise at all? (Excuse my ignorance). I'm a single Mum and I do loads with my son, mostly in the summer though. Cycling, inline skating, ice skating, tennis and dry slope ski-ing were all favourites last summer. The dry slopes and the ice are lovely and quiet in the summer months. This year we want to do climbing and learn snowboarding! My son can't see a climbing wall without wanting to have a go.

Serendisglair, had to laugh at your comment about the cereal, I was surprised at how little a 30g serving was the first time I weighed it! :D I was also having double without realising :o

Taffy1969, good luck with your weigh in tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about that, it's easy to reach for the comfort food when everything is happening around you. I had a car accident last year and it completely consumed my life for 6 months (major weight gain!). As you've said though, make this year about "you", getting your life together and getting to where you want to be.

Pull up a chair, a cuppa (or a fudge-flavour Cabury Highlights, mmm!) and a low-fat biscuit...
Please continue to hold the line. Your call is very important to us and will be answered by next available robot...

    Ok so here goes!!!

Although i like savoury foods, Not really into cakes etc..... my down fall is sweets, biscuits and crisps.

....... on SW there is a trick with lasagne sheets, seasoning, a sharp knife and an oven. A great savoury snack. You'd need a SW bod to tell you more though. Ditch the sweets and biscuits in favour of these or low-syn snacks from the supermarket - you can get some bags of crisp-type things which are no more than 2 or 3 syns.

I enjoy cooking and cook an evening meal most evenings Sun - Thurs. Fri is fish and chips night and Saturday is also a takeaway day unless i am not busy with house hold chores and shopping etc then i will cook on Saturdays too.

.. I think we've found the problem :) I'm with missyg, two take aways a week is way OTT. If it HAS to be fish and chips then there's the syn-free chips and a HEb for 198g of fish. The chip shop has no place on a weight loss plan, pretend it's closed down unless you are on a red day and taking the batter of your fish. If you like Indian, a simple curry with plain rice can be about 10 syns, for Chinese a veg chow mein is about 6-8 syns

i am not active at all I do not like the gym but would attend classes but have childcare issues which is why i was looking into workout DVD's.

...... waste of money or blank discs in my opinion*. Dance with the kids to the radio for 5 consecutive songs, do some exercise using tins of beans as dumbbells as you cook, go up the stairs three times a day for no other reason than to come back down again, fit in a short walk, do a little dance while you brush your teeth.... millions of ways to get the heart pumping.

EDIT: *except for the Abi Titmuss workout video - that worked for me. After watching that a few times I had a left arm like Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Well I went along tonight and for a long while was the only newbie.
Later 4 more ladies arrived. Why do us women always go in pairs? (I went alone) _pale_ and felt it at first.
I went on my own to sw and had to fight bursting into tears (which is odd coz I've done loads of other things on my own) LL so understand what it feels like
All the information was overwheming and I've spent the rest of the evening working out a meal plan for the week.
It is a lot to take in LL, so be gentle on yourself. Try and read through the book every day. YOu won't get it all right straight away -give yourself a few weeks before you can expect to be getting there, but be assured that once you have 'got it' it is simple. It's so ingrained in my head now after 7 months that I don't look at the book alot. But for 4 months I looked at it everyday and kept a food log to keep track of the HEa' & b's and syns. I can't praise SW highly enough - really worked or me, as I can't do 'being hungry' and I lost2 stone in 7 months (I have other health issues that meant I lost it slower than many)
When told my weight, for some reason, I burst into tears  I wasn't expecting that, or the amount of weight.
More hugs LL, but your leader is right - you will never be that weight again. The hardest bit is now over. And finally, as bails and others have said: You are not alone, you have us to make the hard road easier and more fun. We are always on hand if you are struggling, despairing, confused or have good news to share. I look forward to seeing you lose that weight. And you will if you stick to the plan and stick with us. That is an absolute promise.
(By joining our monthly 5lb challenge you break down large goals into smaller quickly achieable ones too.)

Missyg - it is entirely healthy and normal to put on weight during the day, from liquid and food. I put on 3lbs. It's best to only weigh max once a day, what ever time of day it is and then you are comparing like with like and weight loss is relative.
    Dragon - I am still feeling chuffed for you 24hrs later:T :j
Welcome sweet1. How about planning in advance for evenings you know you are too tired to cook so end up with a takeaway: why not cook double portions of food ealier in the week and freeze 2 of then for another time - that way you build up a store of healthy home cooked 'ready meals'. And don't overwelm yourself with the thought 'I can never have a take away again'. Yes you can, but as an occasional treat, not as a regular twice weekly part of your menu planning (if you want to lose weight that is:D)Find low fat treats for yourself as alternatives to biscuits and crisps. This is a lifestyle change not torture and you mustn't end up feeling deprived - just find treats that are a little better for you
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
