Easy to be cynical but I doubt it will just be an external three pin plug affair.
I'd imagine most builders are already sending tenders to the likes of Podpoint and Zapi asking them to bid on chargers and I'd guess the minimum spec will be 7KW.1 -
born_again said:Builders will just put a external socket & say that is your charging point. Unless it is specified in the regulations it has to be a certain type of socket that can only be used for charging cars."We propose specifying that the chargepoints must have a minimum power rating output of 7kW, be fitted with a universal socket that can charge all types of electric vehicle currently on the market".
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is billing, which is great news for freeholders of large blocks of flats - nice opportunity to skim a bit off the top for you there add some value to every kWh, and bill for an annual inspection of all the charging points

So to add to future UK power shortages - we need to add another 7KW of power to 100s of 1000s of new builds per year (if the government gets its way) and thats on top of existing properties upgrading - rolling power cuts here we come."Local" to me - an estimated 10,000 new homes are planned - in several estates - the extra load on the grid (assuming that the power is available in the first place will be way too much for the existing cabling (even on the local level (132,000v) - so sub stations will need upgrading etc) as well as the feed to this (400,000v) - you may as well start again with the national grid - a hugely expensive proposition - on a par with HS2 in complexity0

One thing to bear in mind is that not everyone will charge at the same time.
Example, I only have to charge once a week and I'm not unusual.4 -

I'm also glad I will never have to visit a petrol station again.
This £1.40 of electricity per 90-100 miles of range along with a far more pleasant drive is ace, I wouldn't go back to ICE and only a matter of time until my wife's diesel gets the bung and she's in an EV too.

£5000 for a very decent EV is feasible.
Of course if you have a lower budget than that, or you want a fancy EV, that's a different argument.0 -

Stopping to recharge is only an issue on a long journey, so I should be stopping in any case for the sake of safety and convenience.2 -

But it's flipping HUGE, far bigger than I need and it means I just can't justify the extra expense over the Leaf.
Leafs are a bargain right now and still drive as well as other EVS, even if the interior is less 'screeny'
