MG5 EV; the  roof rails aren't rated to hold any weight
Latest data on the website includes a larger battery option, which does state a roof rail rating:
    https://mg.co.uk/mg5-ev/

Definitely something you'd need to verify before purchase if that was a critical factor.

It makes little sense that the roof rails have a different rating depending upon the battery size.  If anything, it would be the other way round (lighter battery leaving more weight capacity available) unless MG have taken into account cross-winds and the heavier battery keeps you on the ground ;)

It looks like the roof rails are now an option too for the Exclusive model. I can't figure out why the lighter car has the lower rail rating though because they are almost certainly all the same parts.
The Long Range is 8mm taller, presumably because there's more battery, but I can't see how that'd affect it.

35kg doesn't really give much scope, by the time you've added the rails and a carrier you might be able to get a single bike on there, or a pretty small roof box. It might be enough though.

I'm sure it's all down to type approval somehow, but I also wouldn't trust any random driver to check the specs before they stick a roof box on there.

As far as anyone can tell the roof rails are identical across the LR and SR versions. I believe it's simply that they neglected to get the correct type approval for the original launch so stuck it through at the conservatively low 35kg retrospectively. The LR was then done properly and tested up to 75kg, gaining approval at the higher weight for the same rails.

At £24,500 under the 'affinity' scheme, the MG5 LR is vastly cheaper than any other EV with close to the same range.

If buying and you need the same sort of range, I think a 62 Leaf would be a more sensible buy.
I don't fancy the depreciation of the MG, I think the Leaf will hold its value a lot better.
The Leaf also offers pre-heating/cooling and other features via an app, which I believe the MG doesn't.
Even if the MG looked good, the lack of an app is a deal breaker for me, one of the HUGE bonuses of the Leaf is being able to preheat remotely in the winter (whether plugged in or not).

I like the MG5 and it is the only EV I'd currently buy apart from a TM3.

However, this "affinity" pricing is a problem for me.  I don't work for the NHS so cannot get the "affinity" price but this means I'd be suffering an immediate >20% hit on value over-and-above the hit on driving any new car from the showroom.

The MG5 is a lot bigger than the Leaf, though?

I'm also not sure what depreciation on it is going to be like given it's a pretty cheap EV.

Plus, the Leaf is just "weird" looking and all disjointed.

I can't help feeling that if SAIC retained the Roewe branding on the EVs sold in the UK as MG, nobody would go near them...

Fair comment, I find the MG just so bland and dull it automatically looks 10 years old to me - at least.

It's an estate, so will have an advantage over the Leaf in that respect.
The Leaf is spacious though and the boot is big.
Depreciation is definitely a worry on the MG, it already looks very dated and will just get worse as time goes by and who knows what the long term reliability will be like.
There's no such worries with the Leaf, proven track record of reliability and even heavily used ones are snapped up.
