  • I've set up some direct debits from my Chase account that I'm going to switch away (probably to Nationwide). They are visible as 'pending'. Should I wait for these payments to go through at least once before initiating the switch, or can I crack on with it now?

    Bit of advice needed here.

I have 2 Chase current accounts. 1 with a decent amount of savings currently earning 5% which I obviously want to keep, and a 2nd one which was set up purely for switching (to Nationwide).

I have my active direct debits set up, and am now initiating the switch away from account no2 to Nationwide.

One of the questions Nationwide asks me is for the last 5 digits of my Chase debit card. My Chase debit card is linked to account no1 (not the one I want to switch away). Is this an issue, or do I need to link my Chase debit card to account no2 before initiating the switch?

I would like to keep my Chase debit card, and don't want it to be automatically cancelled once the switch goes through, but I obviously want to do the switch properly.

Can you not just say to NWide that you don't have a debit card? My understanding is they're usually only after that info to help prove the identify of the switch requester, rather than for any technical reason about the card (since the closing bank will have that information already).

I've tried to skip the question, but won't let me.

I did wonder if it was purely for identity purposes.

The question reads... "Please provide details of your Debit cards from your old bank / building society account", and next to it says "Your card details will be used to make sure that any recurring VISA payments you have set up will transfer to your Nationwide account"

When I switched to Santander recently, they said that if you didn't have a debit card for your account, you would have to make the switch request in branch.

I also know (from experience) that if you've got a debit card, but don't provide the details, the switch can fail - so I suspect they're often just being careful given that the vast majority of people will have a debit card for the account they want to switch.

Point is, Nationwide might need you to go in branch / telephone to process it.  Maybe worth a question.

You can't switch just one of your chase current accounts, it will close your entire account.

Just use the last digits of the debit card you have, it makes no difference which current account it's linked to.

But you say "I have 2 Chase current accounts. 1 with a decent amount of savings currently earning 5%", the second of those must be a savings account, you don't get any interest on the Chase current account any longer. Are you sure you have two CAs and are switching one of those?

Be careful completely closing a Chase account - You're burning your bridges behind you.
They won't let you ever open an account again

That is simply untrue and not how CASS works at all!

Thanks for highlighting that. I recently opened the 5% savings account with Chase and that's where my savings are held now.
I definitely have 2 current accounts: No1 (which the card is linked to) has a balance of zero, and No2 has a few quid in there and 2 active direct debits.
