There have been horror stories where if you don't buy referred products from the EA where they'd earn extra commissions they are more reluctant to put you forward. Can be worth saying - by all means send me the details so it leaves the door open even if you have other plans / arrangements in place.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

KajiKita said:Wow, that is appalling ….! Well done for standing your ground, but soooo frustrating that this vile, misogynistic nonsense has come between you and that property! So angry on your behalf. Please do persist!!KK
Plus the manager says I can put a counter offer in whilst the EA last night said the vendor was going with the man as long as he passes all the checking/financing - both can not be true so will be querying that on the 3 way call - and stating I am planning to put in a written complaint and will contact the estate agents association and the property ombudsman so any lies will be uncovered then - if my offer is not passed onredofromstart said:Tricky, I'd not be buying anything via that agent whatsoever no matter much I wanted it, and I would file a written complaint, with screen shots. I'd also be copying (and telling the EA owner that I had) the person selling the flat, by post, to the flat address (and quite possibly saying that I'd have gone up another X£ if the EA wasn't such an obstructive fool).Merlin's_Beard said:That is enragingly frustrating, although sadly 100% believable.Sistergold said:Oh what a terrible injustice by the EA!
Yep ...and it takes so much time to find a decent flat and i have other things to focus onSandyShores said:Hmm, makes you wonder who the other buyer is - relative, friend of the EA?

DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

*Salutes*
Thank you for sticking up for all of us sister.
Absolutely follow the complaint and escalation pathway and don't be delayed by the manager wanting to get EAs story straight first. Surely they must have a timeline they need to follow with complaints otherwise it goes to ombudsman.
Though I also wouldn't fight to be allowed to give these fools commission money, especially for a place with JKW. Get justice served and continue checking out other properties and areas

Still appalled by estate agent. Have you thought about dropping the vendor a line simply saying you put a very good offer on the table that was not even passed on to the vendor. You understand the vendor has decided to go with another buyer but (state your position) and that should the buyer fall through you would still be interested and can proceed very quickly. (The EA is unlikely to contact you after all, and, is just backing you into a corner to get you to pay more).
I once popped a card through a door saying I knew the house was sold subject to contract and if the sale did not make it to contract I was keen to proceed. A surprising number of sales don't go through and in that instance I did get a call.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!7 -
Personally I would walk away from the property, irrespective of any apologies. I fully understand your frustration and anger. By all means report them and follow through but on two levels I would not touch it: hell would have to freeze over before I contributed (albeit indirectly) to that EA's profits. They clearly cannot be trusted. Secondly, they have lied about things so why do you think other info you have such as JKW are honest, truthful and not banking a load of carp for the future?

I am with @Suffolk_lass, I would walk away from this property. The process of buying is a long and nail biting process such that you don’t want to be throwing in a dishonest EA in the mix. With the right house everything will be aligned. The only big fight you fight is the fight to save the deposit after that it should fall into place with a light fight. When I bought the place I am in now the EA was dishonest BUT the lucky thing was I had done the viewing with the vendor, we got on so much we exchanged numbers after we had agreed on the price. When the EA was asking vendor to go with someone else and that they will get a better offer she refused. If you CAN walk away for sure a better place will come. Ofcause you can also try and fight this through if there can be such a thing with the EA in the middle of it all.Initial mortgage bal £487.5k, current £258k, target £243,750(halfway!)
