The only way to find out is to request the PAC and see what they offer when the call back to try and keep her on.
Indeed, but it's always good to get an idea of what is achievable in advance of that call.

It shouldn't do if indeed she does have any 'loyalty bonus' as she won't have left Orange. Wouldn't it make more sense to go on this 1 month sim only from Virgin for £12 per month with 1200 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB data until she's ready to get an iPhone 5?
The thought was that the loyalty bonus may be based on a mixture of time served as a customer and monthly spend, so that reducing the monthly spend just prior to asking for a handset deal might be counterproductive. I don't really know how Orange work though, so this is just speculation on my part.

Yes, that Virgin deal is what I would recommend to her if I thought she would listen! Not the case, unfortunately.

Have a read of this thread, you might well have to go back 5-10 pages though.

If she goes over her minutes or data (or both) quite regularly, they will be more inclined to offer a better deal than if she always stays within the allowances. Telling them what Three are offering might help when negotiating as well.

  • Hi

    Just been offered the following:

    iPhone 5 - £250 handset cost

    1000 mins
    Unltd texts
    1GB Internet

£25 per month (24 month contract)

Overall, this works out better than the standard iPhone tariffs, but I didn't think retentions could do any 'offers' for iPhone??

Should I try for anything lower?

Other option is to negotiate a very cheap monthly tariff of say £15 per month (I only use approx 300mins, 100 texts and 200MB data average) but on a good handset such as the Samsung S3, sell the handset and buy an iPhone 5. I did this a few years ago and the overall cost over 2 years was cheaper than iPhone tariffs, although a bit of messing around selling phone etc.

Am I likely to get a decent deal on an S3??

    Thanks for any help/views

That seems like an awesome deal! I've been trying to get *something* on a 4s but have repeatedly been told there's nothing they can do.

Thanks for posting twinkle007, as I am looking at this for my wife.

Realistically, your usage shouldn't cost you more than about £8 per month, if for example you were willing to sign up to a 12-month SIM-only deal. You could go even lower with occasional cashback offers on TCB/Quidco.

Therefore, although you have a good offer there, I don't think it is the right one for you.

    1. Your deal: £250 + £25*24 = £850

    2. Buy outright: £524 (from Apple minus Topcashback 1%) + £8 * 24 = £716

    3. Get S3 on contract, sell, buy SIM free:
I reckon a BNIB S3 could fetch you £320. Then we have to guess what sort of deal Orange would give you that would match your usage profile. Not sure I know the answer, but say you have to pay them £21/month to get a free handset with acceptable usage...
    524-320+24*21 = £708
... so that is roughly your breakeven deal, although obviously it has a better cash flow profile than outright purchase. On the other hand, SIM-free would give you more flexibility if your usage patterns change or you need to change networks for coverage etc.

Actually, twinkle007, you have got me thinking about trying something similar.

I'd like an S3, my wife would like an iphone 5. She has the high-spend/loyalty with Orange, and is reluctant to move, whereas I am on a low-cost SIM-only deal elsewhere.

What if she asks for the S3 from Orange, I pay her cash (£360? to reflect that it will probably be locked and branded), and she buys the iphone 5 SIM-free from Apple?

She might get a free S3 and plenty of minutes, data etc. for £21-23 a month. So she would be looking at £164 for the phone plus £23/month, which compares favourably with the £109 and £36/month that Orange offer as their basic deal.

The problem is the nano-SIM - would Orange send her a free nano-SIM immediately after she has signed up for a 24-month deal on an S3? Not sure I want/know how to file down a micro-SIM to a nano. Edit: I know I would need to root the phone to unlock it, but I would probably do this anyway (rooting), so that doesn't bother me too much.

They did with my wife, she was getting upgraded phone HTC, and requested nano sim for an iPhone at the same time. They sent it same time.
  • I've had another go with retentions, after deciding to splash out a bit more than the previous Samsung Ace deal I was offered. This is what I've now agreed to:

    £18.50 per month
    Samsung Galaxy S3 - £70
    750 X-minutes
    unlimited texts
    1.25 Gg data

That seemed pretty good as it works out at around £22 a month with better allowance than the cheapest cashback deals.

BUT - I wanted the titanium colour which the guy said was 4G and £40 more. Should I have paid the extra? I don;t use internet much, but would this make the phone much more valuable to sell on - I've wondered about selling it straight away and carrying on using my existing phone.
