I've just gone and blown through my budget by purchasing a litre of spiced rum rather than a 35cl bottle of own brand!
My only excuse is that the member of staff (teetotal) I was asking for advice suggested that the flavour would be better because the spices had been blended expertly and that in consequence I might be able to reduce or even omit the additional ingredients in my planned recipe which struck me as a real possibility.
I'm intending to make Diana Henry's ginger roasted plums again as M*rks are doing plum punnets on their fresh market and I bought 2 so watch this space to see if it's worth buying the clubcard price Capn. Morg*n,£16, or not.
Anyway as well as the rum I bought radishes and frozen fruit from Mr T for a total of £19. 68. I also fell for various other purchases in M*rks on Weds and spent £7.90 and subsequently spent £6.74 at the Turkish supermarket on pomegranate molasses and filo pastry.
That brings my new total to £134.94/£124 and my daily average spend to a whopping £8.43.
Ah well, at least I've already paid for my veg box and it's due here on Tuesday am so I'll just have to get as far as I can on whatever is delivered along with the fridge, freezer and larder."She could squeeze a nickel until the buffalo pooped."

Hi, hope it's OK just to join in for the rest of July, I only have a total of £28.43 left to spend and I really want to do it without taking money from somewhere else! I have had a quick check through cupboards and freezer and with the allotment I should be ok, the only item I will definitely need is coffee!!!! So the only thing really stopping me is ME!!!!!!

Hi everyone
I did well with my meal planning and used everything up in my fridge freezer. On 15 July I spent £44.05 at M$so$ions which makes my total spend £57.30/£120. This spending included washing powder for clothes I've forgot the last time I bought some, Dishwasher tablets and some fresh veg.
I am pleased that I meal planned and I found a way to avoid spending the local shop when I had to go to Post Office these businesses are opposite each other, this was to not take a bag, so simple but it worked for me.
On Monday 19 July I am starting some voluntary work 1 day a week 10am-4pm, for 13 weeks max or until I start paid employment. I have already planned in a packed lunch for Monday.

I LOVE a good spiced rum but usually for drinking not for cooking 🤪goldfinches said:I've just gone and blown through my budget by purchasing a litre of spiced rum rather than a 35cl bottle of own brand!

Aaaand I've really lost the plot this time! I don't think I'm far adrift but there's a supermarket spend I've lost the receipt for and really can't remember how much it was: I think it was around £36. Plus £55 at the market, and another £22 at the farm shop butchers. So I'll add £113 to my running total; it's not going to be far adrift from reality. My excuse is, of course, the imminent arrival of our first grandson; first they're coming for a meal, then it's too hot to travel (understood!) DD1's BF's not coming, then he is, because his clients for this evening's fitness sessions have all cancelled... DS3's away for the week which is - inexpensive - but the weather's suddenly hot, which is expensive as everyone wants salad just when I'd given up trying to grow it! I suspect I've just grown monster slugs instead.
However, there are goodies beginning to stream in from the allotment & the garden; first few courgettes, last of the peas, broad & horse beans, first of the runners, new potatoes (including some Pink Fir Apples, which I didn't actually plant but am always delighted to eat!) strawberries, raspberries & gooseberries. I've just made gooseberry fool for 5, and there's enough left to do a small batch of strawberry & gooseberry jam; I did some strawberry & redcurrant last week. There's loads of kale & rhubarb too & the first few mini-cucumbers & tomatoes are ripening in the greenhouse. But the weeds have gone from inch-high muddy green dots to shoulder height & seeding inside a couple of weeks.
I'd defrosted 2 chickens to feed DS2 & his lady wife today, who are not now coming, but DD1's BF will eat some of their portions; I'm just NOT doing a full roast with all the trimmings in this heat, but have made paté with the livers to enjoy with salad mid-week. Cold chicken, ham & salads, followed by lashings of HM ice cream or Greek yogurt with fruit, is the whole meal plan for this week, with the addition of HM quiche (they're still laying like mad; I've just boiled up 15 bantam eggs to add into the salads) as DD1 "needs" something hot at every meal. If we get fed up with salad, I'll do curry, but mostly I'm staying out of the kitchen!Angie - GC Nov 25 £340.86/£450: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 40/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)5 -
