My doctor does not recommend Chondiotin as it comes from cattle and he is concerned about BSE.

As I have mentioned in the past, if you are over 60 you can get Glucosamine free on NHS perscription. It's available in 500 and 750 mg. Ask your doctor for a prescription.

Some of the Chondroitin now comes from a marine as opposed to bovine source which is thought to be safer and eliminate the BSE risk - certainly healthspan and simply supplements products contain this. I would go back and discuss this with you GP.
  • How fast does glucosamine work? as in how long till you see positive effects? My dad has hip and knee problems and seems resigned to his fate as the GP just tells him it's wear and tear!
    I love this site! :j
  • Glucosamine oral bioavailability and plasma pharmacokinetics after increasing doses of crystalline glucosamine sulfate in man indicates Glucosamine elimination half-life was only tentatively estimated to average 15hr so it persists in circulation for a couple of days. You only need to take it once a day (The time release versions therefore probably aren't worth it) 1500mg appears to be the most effective dose. These substances are characterised by both a several week delay in improvement of OA symptoms and by a carryover effect of that improvement

So although some people will be lucky and get a fairly swift response for others the gradual build up of Glucosamine in the blood will mean it only takes effect after a several weeks but that effect will continue for a while after you stop taking the tablets. My partner has been using them for a year or so and wasn't convinced they were doing her any good so she stopped taking them and felt worse so has gone back to taking them again and agrees they take a while to build up before you notice the benefit.

A further note about the various vitamin companies recommended here. My wife will not use gelatin as it is derived from boiled cattle hooves, so we always use gelatin-free capsules. Neither Zipvit or Simply Supplements offer 1000mg capsules of Cod Liver Oil or Omega 3 in gelatin-free capsules. ZipVit do not offer gelatin-free at all, Simply Supplements do so in the smaller 400mg size, but this would mean taking 3 of these per day to get the recommened dosage. Healthspan do offer these gelatin-free in the larger size.
So once again the price is not everything, it is what suits you best.

    @ OP,

What size are these 1500mg tablets?

The OH is rubbish at taking pills so if they are huge there is no point me getting 360 of these and wasting them!!!

  • Cod Liver Oil Capsules St Clements 1000mg with added Omega 3 - Gelatin Free 180 capsules £7.45

However you should note the fact that they only contain EPA75mg, DHA 100mg =175mg OMEGA 3 and cost about 4p capsule about 9 of these tablets (cost 36p) would provide the same amount of omega as 1tsp of Omega Juice.

If you changed to using 1tsp of ZIPVIT Omega Juice daily you would be getting DHA 600mg + EPA 900mg = 1.5g per 5ml dosage. - 360ml £4.95 about 1.3p day

While cost isn't everything this is a moneysaving website and getting value for money does mean you have to be aware of the amount of active ingredient which is known to be effective and also the amount of active ingredient you are buying.

    Joint Genie - Glucosamine Liquid
    - The Magic is in the Bottle Joint Genie is a convenient way of taking Glucosamine without the fuss or distress of taking large, hard to swallow tablets. One serving is equivalent to taking three 500mg tablets. Extensive research indicates that a liquid is absorbed much quicker than tablets or capsules, which can reduce the amount absorbed to less than 20%. With liquids, the amount absorbed is as much as 90%. Contains real fruit juice, easy to swallow liquid, 1500mg Glucosamine per 10mg concentrated serving, quick absorbency. - 360ml - 36 days supply

    Joint Genie - Glucosamine Liquid
    - 1080ml - 108 days supply

This is easier to take and works faster, if he notices the difference and feels the improvement in mobility and lack of pain is directly related to having his Joint Genie in the morning he may be more likely to take it.

The zipvit site has a picture of their tablets which you can click to enlarge
