This has come up before, from OAP. However you can only get it on prescription if you doctor is in a conferring group which believe in it and prescribe it. It is not in the NHS book. Our doctor's group unfortunately are not convinced so we can't get it. Worth asking though.
Any doctor can prescribe it generically and he will get paid for it by the NHS. But many will choose not to as you can buy it over the counter and save their prescribing budget. Much like paracetamol et al. So yes, your individual GP needs to be convinced.
  • Please be careful when buying cheap glucosamine (and other supplements).

Glucosamine is not classed as a medicinal product hence its quality cannot be assured. It is not subject to the same rigorous tests as medicines and preparations may not contain the amount stated on the label.

It is best to purchase it from a pharmacy as they will stock high quality preparations - avoid buying it from adverts in the back of sunday papers.

Sorry - Cannot agree with ALL of your statement. Some highly reputable companies who pride themselves on the quality of their products, advertise in the National Press. Healthspan, Simply Supplements & ZipVit fall into this category. There are other unreliable companies to be sure, but it is not fair to generalise in this way.

  • I have used Zipvit for supplements for a couple of years and have been very pleased with both the quality and service.
I tried Simply Supplements once and they let me down for weeks on part of the order blaming their supplier. I posted on here at that time.
I figured I'd give them another try thinking it was one of those things and guess what? Same problem - part of the order missing again with no explanation. After FOUR WEEKS I am promised delivery early next week. Every week I have been promised delivery the following week with SS blaming their supplier.
Whilst I was also pleased with the quality of their supplements there is no way I would order from them again.
  • Hi, I'm sure I've seen a thread on here about this before, so sorry in advance but am just trying to work out the cheapest way to buy this. Also does anyone know if you can get this on prescription, my consultant has advised me to take it for arthritis in my foot? Thanks for any help

You'll only know if you can get it on prescription by asking your doctor. Some do, some don't. If you can't the cheapest place is HERE
  • The liquid glocosamine works best apparently.

Not sure about the cheapest but I would recommend Healthspan http://www.healthspan.co.uk/

Just checked and 1000mg 360 tablets is £10.95
