There's no need to pay for Glucosamine. It can be obtained on the NHS with a prescription. My doctor has been prescribing it for me for about three years. Regards, Art.
This has come up before, from OAP. However you can only get it on prescription if you doctor is in a conferring group which believe in it and prescribe it. It is not in the NHS book. Our doctor's group unfortunately are not convinced so we can't get it. Worth asking though.

Hello everyone, I have been reading with interest all yours comments regarding glucosamine. I feel that it is time for me to start taking this supplement, one or two reasons come immediately to mind, age being the main one ;) and after recently breaking my arm a friend suggested I should take it.
My sister (58) has suffered with arthritis for many, many years and yet her Dr has never mentioned glucosamine  she daily doses of pain killers and cod liver oil to get through the day, I wonder if glucosmine might benefit her??
It looks as if taking glucosamine with chondrotin can be more benifical but, being a vegetarian that would not be an option for me, can the vegetarian option be as benefical?
    Thank you

    Hi Carmen

I would definitely recommend Glucosamine for your sister.

I went to see an orthopaedic surgeon about two years ago with my knackered knee and he recommended it to me. I have heard people on site saying 1000mg is the recommended daily dose, or even 1500mg. but the surgeon told me 750mg tablets, two a day for the first week then one a day.

I have also found using a TENS machine is very good for pain relief.

    Hope this helps

Reading the posts about daily amounts is it possible to overdose on this?

    750mg - 2500mg seems a vast difference to take.

I'm sure I've read that taking too much of a suppliment is worse than not taking one at all.

Thank you Chrissy, I will definately get my sis started on this and if she can persuade her Dr to prescribe it, even better!

In general shouldn't doseage depend on the size of the person.

For example should a 24 stone person take 3 times as much as an 8 stone person.

My husband is about 15 stone heavier than me and I often wonder about this.

    Glucosamine Dosage
    • 500mg of Glucosamine Sulfate three times daily
    • Obese patients may need to increase dosage due to excessive stress on weight-bearing joints: 20mg / kg body weight daily.
Looks like these people agree with you. It sounds like common sense.

The decision was not my GPs although he went along with it. An orthopedic surgeon recommended it. He told me his professional body had carried out a study and it was proved to be of value to some patients.
