Joint Genie Glucosamine and Chondroitin Liquid - Four bottles for the price of three! - 4x360ml 72days supply (you need 20ml/d) £29.85 Both the above contain Glucosamine Sulphate rather than the veggie form.[/QUOTE]
Thanks for correcting my earlier post. I had indeed quoted the price for the Glucosamine Liquid only. The 4 for 3 offer on the combined stuff means you get 72 days supply. For £29.85 this is quite an expensive way of taking it, but is very easy & convenient. Each 20 ml gives you the full 1500 mg of Glucosamine and 1200 mg of Chondroitin.

Ted talks such sense! This has made for interesting reading.

I haven't time to post at length, but Tescos are selling their Omega 3+6+9 one a day (90)capsules in a BOGOF offer for £8 something......(£8.60?)

Glucosamine didnt do much for me - but I gave up after about four months, so perhaps I should have given it a longer trial?

I have discovered that magnet therapy is working for me. My sister bought me a (heavy and quite ugly) necklace for my birthday last year, and I wear it constantly. All my neck, shoulder and upper back aches and pains have vanished. I feel quite energised. Now I am looking into magnetised water....because some people swear by that as well!

I might be turning into an alternative therapies crank, but it has to be better than taking prescription drugs.

Apparently Glucosamine is a waste of time and money – maybe a case of all in the mind.

Well that is what one study finds.

The latest and largest study into its effects, the GAIT (glucosamine arthritis intervention trial), published this year, found glucosamine proved no better than a placebo in relieving osteoarthritic knee pain.

This is well worth a read and see Editor’s footnote.……

However, I’m open to proven counter argument as my joints are starting to squeek.

I don't take glucosamine as I don't have osteoarthritis (OA) however my partner does have pains in the knee and when she does she takes glucosamine sulphate and then she doesn't have the pain.
If she stops taking the glucosamine the pain returns. Irrespective of whether or not Glucosamine Sulphate is having an impact on her brain (placebo) or because of positive effects on symptomatic and structural outcomes on her knee OsteoArthritis, the result is that she can walk pain free This is sufficiently acceptable proof for her to go on buying and taking the glucosamine.

Current role of glucosamine in the treatment of osteoarthritis. states The most compelling evidence of a potential for inhibiting the progression of OA is also obtain with Glucosamine Sulphate (GS). Conclusions. GS has shown positive effects on symptomatic and structural outcomes of knee OA.
it goes on to point out . These results should not be extrapolated to other glucosamine salts [hydrochloride or preparations (over-the-counter or food supplements)] in which no warranty exists about content, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the tablets. but you can decide for yourself if the tablets from the source you are using appear to be having an impact on the level of pain you experience. If you have taken 1500mg glucosamine for a period of time and it has had no effect on your OA then either try GS from another source or try not using it and see if the pain gets worse.

Glucosamine is bioavailable both systemically and at the site of action (the joint) after oral administration of crystalline glucosamine sulphate in ostaeoarthritis patients.

These observations suggest that GlcN treatment enhances hMSC chondrogenesis and maintains cartilage matrix gene expression in chondrocytes, which may account for some of the reported chondroprotective properties of GlcN on cartilage.

Many thanks for your considered reply.

I really stumbled into this topic as recently my wife was advised by her doctor to consider taking glucosamine. But my opinion on drugs is coloured by our negative experience in the early sixties when thalidomide was widely prescribed.

So my starting point with a drug is not to take it. However, I accept there are a few times when it can be beneficial.

Statin is another drug where its benefits have been blown out of all proportion.

I’ve taken on board what you say but we’ll mull the subject over a bit longer yet.

I feel the best thing for anyone to do ....
is to keep looking at all the info you can find
and especially take into account what people tell you about their personal experiences

A study published in the Lancet (medical journal) in 2001 show that glucosamine effectively controlled osteoarthritis symptoms and even suggested that it produced some reversal of the disease process. More recently (2003) scientists reviewed the reported effects of 15 studies using either glucosamine or/and chondroitin on osteoarthritis of the knee and found treatment with either glucosamine or glucosamine plus chondroitin to be effective. This study even concluded that supplementation will improve joint mobility for 1 in 5 patients and may slow narrowing of joint spaces.

Furthermore, all these clinical studies of glucosamine in arthritis of the knee or hip, note that:
    • Onset of reduced symptoms does not occur for several weeks after starting glucosamine
    • Benefits persist for several weeks or months after glucosamine is discontinued
    • No reports that continued use reduces the impact or efficiency
    • I also found this info;
    • :j:j:j:j since taking glucosamine + evening primrose oil + omega 3 rich fish oil
