If you are over 60 you can get Glucosomine free on prescription from your GP. I get 750mg tablets from my GP regularly. Ask your GP for a prescription.

We've all heard of postcode lottery with the NHS, well there is also GP lottery! Our Surgery and the group to which they confer with, do not prescribe Gluco/Chondroitin as they are not on the full NHS list. They are on an "under consideration" level (or similar) and so we cannot get them free.

I don't understand this. A trial on Glucosomine was carried out at St. Peters Hospital in Surrey and as a result of the trial it was approved for use in the NHS by NICE.

I think you need to speak to your GP again. At my surgery a number of the GPs will prescribe it but there are 2 GPs that won't. They tell their patients that it is not available. A neighbour of mine eventually got it when he made a fuss and pointed out that one of the other GPs in the practice prescribed it. My orthopedic consultant also recommends its use and prescribed for me this week.

    Regards,
    Art.
  • Thankyou all for info. Will try sites as I take gloucasomine and have a sister who is more severely disabled and will be glad to save some money I have been getting mine from Healthy Direct and a years supply of 1500mg costs £28.

Just because something can be prescribed doesn't mean your GP has to do so.

As it isn't prescription-only, if he doesn't think it's necessary in your particular case, he's quite entitled to suggest you buy it over the counter if you so wish.
  • I have been reading this thread with great interest as I have been buying mine from Holland and Barrett at the cost of £50 for 240 tabs. I did try some cheaper ones last year from Goldshield they cost just £12.95. I was delighted but within 3 days suffered severe heartburn, I stopped taking them, the heartburn disappeared, I tried again two weeks laters and the heartburn returned. What I'm trying to say is, how can you tell which are good or poor quality, what do you look out for, I want inexpensive but also want quality. Help!!

Hello, as mentioned above our gp precribes glucosamine and chon to both of us, one for shoulder, one for knee, however, the tablets gave me indigestion so he has now prescribed it in liquid form called Jointflex, regards oap

If your GP won't prescribe as mine won't, and you want top quality, go for HEALTHSPAN, but I have to say that ZIPVIT & SIMPLY SUPPLEMENTS are also very good. I have never had anything less than top quality from Healthspan on any of their products but you can find cheaper. They usually have a Sale this time of the year and reduce a few items, it is a freephone number or you can order on line:

  • Anyone using Healthpan until the 31-12-06 may like to use code CAR-RRN to reduce the cost by £2 on orders over £15 Taking the order over £15 also avoids the P&P£1 FEE.

You can always add some St Clements Cod liver oil liquid. Good source for some of your vitamin d and high in DHA for those whose mood is a bit low.

It would be helpful if someone posted the next Healthspan code.

Remember to compare the strength of what you are getting with H&B's current specials
