Likely as successful as my wish to continue using cheques instead of a debit card......such is progress!

I suspect that the 2 new Lidls opening in our area in the next couple of weeks are bound to have self service.  Sigh.

On the plus side - they do have the very large pack of smoked trout in stock.  £5.99 for about 300g.  It was very nice last year when we had some for Christmas.  Shame this pack has a bbd of 8th Dec.  Guess I'll have to just gobble it all up.

I wouldn't mind @brie if it was genuine progress. How will High Streets survive if they keep reducing customer service. ☹️

Fortunately, my frequent purchases of wine mean I always need staff intervention.😁

Thanks for the heads up on the smoked trout in Lidl. 😋
  • My local Lidl has just got new self-service tills.   They've obviously been given the latest software as they are extremely fast (especially compared to older tills in other Lidls, which were extremely slow).

With a basket or box full of groceries and another box to put them in, you can scan as fast as Lidl staff do on the main tills, which is great.
But anything with a sticker needs a supervisor to authorise. So worth bunching them together to get them out of the way.
In my local, town centre, Lidl, 30% off always go through without a problem.  The full price is displayed first and then the reduction appears when the item is placed on the "sold" side.

The round amounts (20p, 70p, £1.50, etc) items usually just go through without a fuss.  Sometimes the instruction is to remove the item but you can usually carry on scanning normally.

It is rarely that staff have to check item.  That said, it is still a good idea to keep such items together just in case.
  • I can't believe how moreish Lidl's pineapple cottage cheese is! Despite being cottage cheese it still manages to hit the spot.

I'm ashamed to admit that I ate some of the Lidl chocolate marzipan bar last night. It was meant to be off limits until Christmas. Lush though. 😋

Am I the only one who is concerned about the jobs of store staff if we all go to self serve tills?  Granted I've never managed to use one without store assistance.....
I've carried out an ongoing one woman (although I suspect I'm not alone) campaign against self service. That's not just in Lidl but in banks and anywhere else I have an option.

Unfortunately it's doomed to fail. In our city centre Lidl store, they frequently don't have a staffed check out open.
The Lidl which I use was opened 3 years ago and no self scans. Yet in the student areas, they have them in their stores.

So they presume the students are more honest?  Or that they are too impatient to wait in queues?

I have often wondered how much in general gets stolen with self serve.  I would suspect maybe it's just the 15-20p bags but who knows!

I'd imagine it's that they are more likely to have smaller shops and use contactless payment, so ideal for self-service tills.

Some students literally buy what they are having for evening meal that night.

I bought enough for about 5 days - had a small freezer for the odd YS item.
