  • Tried the Lidl steak and stilton pies (frozen) 2 for £1.99 .
Whilst there was not an abundance of meat, it was fine (small pieces with no gristle) and the stilton gravy/sauce was delicious - the stilton was very noticeable which as a big fan of stilton, suited me down to the ground.
No luck when I went back for more to replace - they may be a special Christmas line I guess and once they are gone they are gone.

I like the frozen veggie mushroom and Stilton puffs, they make a nice Christmas main.

@Cornucopia - I have just tried the Snacktastic lentil curls, I can see why you like them!!

I noticed at my local Sainsbury, when trying to track down their own brand loose leaf tea, (why is it in such short supply at JS at the moment?), that they are price matching to Aldi on certain items. Also Aldi was cheapest on the Christmas meal price comparison.

I did a large shop at Lidl a couple of days ago to max the 10% discount - so just over the £200; the 10% plus original 30% off  on various meat purchases close to use by date, meant a £35 saving overall  - however I'm beginning to think there may be a tip over point at which it may be more cost saving to shop at Aldi.

We buy dairy, fruit, nuts & veg, eggs, meat and fish, tinned goods, some grain products, some bakery products, condiments, cleaning products, some wine.

Is there a comparison website where I can plug in my shopping list to get a price comparison?

You can compare prices of specific items at www.trolley.co.uk . it certainly does include some items sold at Aldi, not sure about Lidl. it does however give you an idea of where the cheapest items are available at major supermarkets.

If you want to compare every item it will take you a while but might give you an overview.

Thank you @Katiehound for the website recommendation.  We don't deviate very much from a core list of items so it would be useful to know whether it it worth switching allegiance.  For example, I can't believe that Aldi unsalted butter tastes any different from Lidl's, ditto on tinned tomatoes etc etc

Agree about the ads now. Lidl's used to be really good! Who remembers the "my husband drinks this tea, and my husband drinks this tea. Doesn't matter to me cos I only drink gin" :D

I think they were Aldi adverts.
    She was great.
    I just found this one:
    Aldi - I Like Waiters - YouTube
    I like her style.

I don't like the JL ones or M&S or Morrisons with 'Farmer Christmas'.
Thanks for the link.  I had a giggle over it.  Brilliant advert.

We like those too, but, as you say, the supply is intermittent.  My fave pies are Pieminster which have shot up in price - now £4.50 each, so £9 for two of us is too expensive.  I do buy them in Waitrose when they are reduced though.  I haunt their aisles at the sweet spot time for reductions.

Have Lidl discontinued their Bellarom ground espresso coffee? 250g in a dark brown packet. All I can find is the “gold” one which seems to get bad reviews and is 500g.

Don't you get bored? I can understand 80% core allows you to plan but a bit of leeway could bring some pleasant surprises. That is what the YS aisle is for, which is actually far better at the big supermarkets than Aldi and Lidl.

What is YS?  Re: boredom, not really because we cook from scratch so the items are ingredients so to speak.  Except for ice-cream and christmassy stuff like mince pies; cheese crackers etc - I don't make those from scratch!  Having said that if the OH is with me, he can go a bit off piste and deviate from the list.

It was the price of the eggs (15 free range) in Lidl last shop up to £2.39 that got to me; it seems every time I go to Lidl another 20p has been added to the item price.
