Good and Bad Buys at Lidl and Aldi stores (***Please don't expire***)

A really tasty dessert is Lidl's Sticky Toffee and Apple Pudding £2.75 with the fresh deluxe Madagascan Custard (£1.99). Pudding can be heated in the microwave and also freezes well.1

That's going to be me on this occasion....thriftytracey said:I am only buying one box of fave chocolates for Christmas this year, just the two of us. Better for health, pocket and figure!
Which is ... a box of Lindor. The cheapest was £6 from Tescos 337g or thereabouts.
No doubt someone going to post they have found them cheaper elsewhere!
Sainsbury's have them at £4 a box, 6 -7 different varieties (normal red, salted caramel, double chocolate, mint and a couple of others....
I was going to buy a tin box of them for £11, but weight wise the 337g box worked out better value for money so bought 3 for £12... One Christmas gift down3 -
Just to clarify, the £4 one is the standard size which is 200g (16 chocolates). The 337g is the larger size (27 chocolates) and some retailers also do 600g giant boxes (48 chocolates) for around £10.Coffeekup said:That's going to be me on this occasion....

I usually shop at Lidl because it is a reasonable walk away, not because the food is particularly delicious. I prefer Aldi and did a relatively big shop (for me) there this morning as I was driving past anyway, getting some Christmas goodies and bulky supplies in. One thing I couldn't find was their own version of Baileys, but I bought some wine and gin so was happy with that as an interim pleasure.
I went into Waitrose last weekend for their mince pies which were a total disappointment, so didn't hesitate to sling a couple of packs of Aldi's luxury version into my trolley earlier, on offer at £1.49. The other thing I looked out for was their Christmas cheeses, the chilli cheddar was £8/kg compared to a ridiculous £15/kg at the Waitrose cheese counter, and being pre-packed will last much longer. I cannot get the appeal of Waitrose! No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Yes I made a mistake posting this, it was the 200g ones I got for £4. The 337g was £8, and the tin box was £11 (unsure if the weight now).pumpkin89 said:

The appeal is that people like the food! I think the No1 mince pies are amazing and well worth the price. Shop bought will never be as good as homemade, but I've never tasted better from a shop.Rosa_Damascena said:I went into Waitrose last weekend for their mince pies which were a total disappointment, so didn't hesitate to sling a couple of packs of Aldi's luxury version into my trolley earlier, on offer at £1.49. You evidently have cheap tastes - and I mean that as a great compliment since it's saving you a fortune compared to my shopping

The Lidl potato wedges are just as delicious as their waffles & curly fries. Only brand I'll buy now for those products.1

I think you're right! Was catching up on the Secrets of the Middle Aisle earlier and something that resonated with me was the popularity of mince pies. The former CEO of Aldi said something to the effect "if you haven't grown up with them in the first 20 years of your life you don't see what the fuss is about" indicating it's only the UK that sees the attraction. At which point I decided a 3am munchie was in order and had an inexpensive Lidl mince pie. Deliciouspumpkin89 said:

Still don't get why my chilli cheese was so pricey though. No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Waitrose can be very good. And it can also be very expensive, very ordinary and sometimes quite cheap. It's the one shop that I've gone for an app as things like coke are discountered quite regularly as our some very nice pasta, coffee. I like it when I go in and they have reduced the fresh meat/fish to silly prices. Have lucked out with wild boar burgers for 20p each, trout fillets 6 for 69p and often the special cuts of beef like ox cheeks have been massively reduced as well.pumpkin89 said:

The rest of the time I find it pretty pricey for some very ordinary things and that some of the customers exude the attitude that spending money makes a product quality which I'm sure we all know is not true.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. The winter flavours of FibreNow cake squares are back at Aldi - Cinnamon Squares and Chocolate Orange.
(These replace Peanut Butter squares and the lacklustre Blueberry).2
