  • I went round to a friend's and told them about the deals that could be done with NTL by making the call. They were on:
Base pack of TV and phone £21.50
Unlimited 24 calls add on £14.50
    1mb Broadband £24.99
    Total monthly spend £60.99

    After the call today:
Base pack of TV and phone £11.00
    1mb Broadband £9.99
    Total monthly spend £20.99

Signed them up for 1899 also. They use their home phone to call mobiles so the savings with 1899 should be greater than with NTL. But I might have to recommend 18185 if they are cheaper. Still, at a basic £40 a month better off, they are very happy.
...and then the window licker said to me...

I have been trying to disconnect from NTL for months now. I contacted them at least 4 times over 4 months, each time being told i had to give 30 days notice. But when i called back 30 days later it would seem that my notice had not been given.

I was wondering what i could do? I am really looking for some sort of complaint process i guess.

That's a neat way to keep you on the books - deny all knowledge of 'cease' requests.

Seriously though, I'd would have thought a Recorded Delivery letter telling them the date on which you will deem the service to have ceased would be the best way. I'm sure someone on MSE will come up with a suitable bigwig's name for that to go to.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Were you not advised that you had to cancel in writing?

If so I would definitely send a complaint in!

(Mind you sending in recorded delivery letters doesn't guarantee you a reply from the muppets at NTL.)

    Cheers, Des.
  • I would advise that you follow the complaint advise on the Ofcom website http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/landline/company/.

This will take you through the necessary steps that you should take before submitting a complaint via the Alternative Dispute Resolution (or ADR) scheme.

If you end up having to use the ADR scheme, NTL can be forced to pay compensation if it is deemed that they have treated you unfairly. This will also reflect in NTL’s complaint count at Ofcom.

You will need to calculate the additional costs you have incurred due to their inability to cancel your service and include this in all complaint correspondence.

I just made a call (another one, 1st one was a success for them to price match the new customer deal £19.99 for TV and Phone as I was on the £21.50 Base Pack) but was unsuccessful

I wanted to get broadband as its finally available in our area, and quoted them from this thread that I could get 2MB package for £30.48 for TV, Broadband and Phone with unlimited off peak calls (BT Option 1£10.50 + Tiscali 2MB £19.99 with unlimited off peaks calls + I can get a freeview box as its got all the Base Pack channels on it.)

But the best they offered me was £31.99 2MB line with Local off peak calls.

Was this because I didn't have broadband before like other members who got a discount?

Line was due to move to BT next month. Called NTL and got phone and 1mb broadband for £19.99 including free local evening and weekend calls. Currently paying £17.99 broadband and £10.50 line rental! Worth calling for!
  • Hi Knuckledragger,

I tried to follow up on this offer from Ntl and could only get the phone and the broadband. the TV price was £31 and they wouldn't move on it. Any suggestions if possible before Tuesday as NTL are coming then.

    Thanks
