Seems to confirm my suspicion that Tracker is being made uncompetitive to nudge people off it or to punish financially those who stay on it. I could see the signs months ago and I fear my suspicions have proven correct.

Not sure I would go discount it, it’s still well below the cap rates at this point, of course it all comes down to where the market goes leading into winter, oh and geopolitical risks too.

Edit: of course they have probably found it an easy target to recoup/enhance some profit.🥸

    I'm still on Gas Tracker.
Currently in discussions with Octopus CS re. whether it's meant to be billed on actual daily meter readings or not! Will share whatever conclusion we reach.
Last I heard, it's only billed on actual readings if they have a full month of readings with no missing half hour slots for your gas meter.  If there is even one slot missing, the whole month is billed using a a notional calculation.
    So far, no real progress.
I have exchanged polite emails with my CS rep.
I've been assured by the Octopus CS rep that I *am* being billed "on the actual daily meter readings from your smart meter" and that "the data displayed on your online portal or app is an estimate and may not be completely accurate".
I've now asked for further explanation of these billed amounts:

... which all look suspiciously similar, considering that from the 27th to the 1st the property was empty with the main gas valve turned off :D
Here's the consumption chart from my online account for that period:

CS Rep might be mixed up unless something has changed - yes they might be using your smart meter reading to get the end of month reading, but what I was told is that if there are any slots missing in the month billed, the daily amount will be calculated using an “industry formula”.

When I was on gas tracker and this happened to me almost every month because my SMETS1 smart gas meter was temperamental and would lost the odd slot here and there, it felt like the formula was just based on the idea that you used more gas as the winter sets in and less gas in spring, so for example if it was March you would see higher assumed usage earlier in the month.

Obviously when they use this approach, you will see usage on the days when you were out which is exactly what you are seeing.

There are 3rd party apps like Octopus Watch that can alert you to missing slots.  I’ve also seen people claim that on some older smart meters, if the gas is completely turned off or you don’t use any, Octopus will see this as missing slots even though the meter is still online.  This doesn’t seem to be the case with my new Octopus fitted meter at my new property though.

For the month of August I was also away on holiday with a week of no gas usage at all.

When the bill arrived it showed usage on the days when there was none and the figures for when I did use gas were completely different when compared to the data on the octoaid app or octopus dashboard.

However, the total kW used for the month and amount billed did match the details based on the actual reported data on the octoaid app so I really have no idea how Octopus works it out behind the scenes.

At long as the usage/payment matches then I am not too bothered how they crunch the numbers behind the scenes.

It has always been like this for gas on Tracker though where the numbers for electricity on Tracker are always spot on. I dont know why there is a difference in how they process the data as they get the from the smart meters anyway.

I had exactly the same when we were away in June and the gas price spiked up for a while. Usage averaged across the whole month, including high priced days when the boiler was switched off. Entered into a long correspondence with CS and got absolutely nowhere trying to get them to rebill.
