  • I am still on Tracker for Gas, and Go Faster for Electricity (5 hours from 20:30 @ 5.5p).

Go Faster is saving me money on Electricity because I get to save on evening energy usage as well as charging my car.

Gas is not so much of an issue at the moment, as we're not using much, last months bill was £12.90 for gas and works out cheaper than the Flexible tariff due to the lower standard charge.  August gas averaged at 5.15p (ex vat) for me

However, over the next couple of months when the heating will be needed, I will need to decide what to do and keep an eye on the prices.

I  changed from gas tracker to flexible a few days ago hoping that current flexible tariff will after any price increase be cheaper than any new flexible version Octopus may launch.

  • Why would you stay with octopus for gas? It’s absolutely hideous pricing. Switch away ASAP before the prices keep rising and then in the winter you’ll be paying crazy prices. Surely the small standing charge reduction won’t work out cheaper in the long run.

From my point of view as an extremely low user both fuels i switching electricity about elsewhere for £50 credits thus stay with Octopus for gas for same reason., also now no single gas provider is cheaper fixed than maximum Octopus flexible can  be this side of April after any increase, no single provider has a gas fix less than 4.04pkwh.-  SSE 2 year fix no exit fees is 4.15pkwh, Zog 2 year fix with exit fees is 4.26pkwh, So Energy 1 year fix with exit fee is 5.75pkwh for new signups
  • I struggle to see why many people didn’t see this coming. I was on a very good Octopus fixed gas tariff until late November but as I wasn’t using much gas I switched to Zog for 2 years at a price which was 25% lower than it is today. I came in for a fair amount of criticism for not taking the £30 exit fee into account. However, I calculated that even if I paid the exit fee in March next year, I would still be £100 better off than if I had stayed with Octopus. Today’s Tracker Gas price is a staggering increase on the 1.7p/kWh that I was paying this time last year.

EDF are offering a direct tariff at just under 4.00pkwh with no exit fees till Mar. 24.
I use 16000kw mostly between now and April so moving my gas to Octopus flexible tariff is also an option as I’m being switched to BG from the defunct PFP Energy

EDF also do £50 credit via certain types of links which applies to Gas only as well

Thanks, that tariff didn't come up on uSwitch or Switch/Which? for me.

I have seen SSE, which offered me a 1 year fix at 3.87p per kWh or a 2 year fix at 4.15p per kWh.

Just checked the EDF one and it is 3.985p per kWh for over 2 years.

It's a difficult decision and probably need a crystal ball.  Only 6 months ago on a Tracker I was paying 2.84p per kWh and has nearly doubled since then.  So is this just a blip and will drop back down close to 3p per kWh, in which case, I will be over paying if I switch, or could prices stay at the current level or even increase further, in which case I would save.

I use approximately 14,000 to 16,000 per year, so the difference could be significant.

Any advice?  Switch and ditch or hold tight?

1 year fix is a fibre/fuel package hence called fix and fibre  " By signing up to the SSE 1 Year Fix and Fibre energy tariff you are eligible for a 12-month fibre broadband with Line Rental Only at a discounted rate of £11.50 per month"  not checked to see if that 1 year gas only fix can be taken without fibre
  • Like other SVTs Octopus Flexible Gas is in reality fixed at a maximum of about 4.00pkwh until 1/4/2022.
It could then be worthwhile considering Tracker on low usage for the summer to take advantage of the low standing charge.
