Can anyone give me some advice regarding moving to tracker from economy 7 as Octopus are being unhelpful.

Last year I had a dumb meter and Economy 7 and as I was not making use of the night rate I asked Octopus to change it to the flat rate "flexible" tariff.  They did this and I continued to input day and night meter readings which were charged at the same rate.

In May this year, smart meters were installed by Octopus and I signed up to the Tracker waitlist and moved to the Agile tariff immediately.

I received the Tracker invite email last week and filled in the form but have not been switched to Tracker.  When I emailed Octopus about this they came back with an unhelpful 'tracker is not compatible with two rate meters"

What do I need to tell Octopus in order to get on Tracker for electricity?  Did I just get an unhelpful rep?
That is a bit disappointing. They just need to request that your meter profile is changed to single rate. In my case this took a couple of days and Tracker could begin from midnight on the day of the change. The social media team have been helping people with this.

If you switch to Tracker, and then you want to leave again later, do you have to switch to a non smart tariff or can you switch straight from Tracker to Go or Agile?  (I am aware of the 9 month and 30 day things, I am more thinking if you have been on Tracker for a while and you want to move to Go or whatever)?

Tracker has its own rules as until all customers on tracker have smart meters it cannot be regarded as a smart tariff, should be able to switch from tracker to a smart tariff subject to might take up to 2 weeks to change tariff.

Interesting because after joining Octopus, when I asked to switch to Go, it was done the same day - I was already on Go by midnight that day (at least according to the website although I suppose I might not fully understand how Octopus works yet).

This "up to 2 week" delay is quite new and only relates to people leaving the Tracker tariff since it reopened to the masses. Other switches are as you describe.
  • The terms and conditions relating to Octopus Smart Tariffs (including Tracker) are here:

    https://octopus.energy/policies/smart-tariffs-terms-and-condition/

The important points relating to Tracker are these:

‘1.3 You can always switch from a standard import tariff to a smart import tariff (provided you meet the eligibility criteria for that particular tariff), but if you switch away from a smart import tariff, you cannot switch back to a smart import tariff within 30 days.’

    And finally:

‘2.9 These terms apply to the Octopus Tracker tariff - Last updated on 30th June 2023 (Version C)

These terms are supplemental to and apply in addition to our General Terms and Conditions.

2.9.1 Prices for Octopus Tracker tariff are calculated based on a formula related to wholesale costs. A different price is published for each day of consumption. Prices are usually published from 00:00 on the day, and can be viewed in your Octopus account or in our mobile app.

2.9.2 As pricing for Octopus Tracker is dependent on a third party process, if we do not receive pricing data before 22:00 the day before consumption, we will continue to use the most recently received pricing data we have available to us. Prices may continue to rollover up until we receive new pricing data, and/or we may correct our pricing following receipt of the updated pricing data for the relevant period, which we will publish as soon as reasonably possible after we receive it. We receive the daily pricing data for electricity from N2EX and gas data from Marex.

2.9.3 Octopus Tracker is a Variable Rate Tariff, and your daily standing charge and the unit rate pricing formula is variable and subject to change. We will give you reasonable notice of any changes. The formula which sets out how we use the daily pricing data from N2EX and Marex to calculate your energy price is set out in our Tracker FAQ's and which are available at www.octopus.energy/tracker-faqs/.

2.9.4 Prices can rise as well as fall, though the unit rate is capped at the amount specified at the time of switching, or as subsequently notified to you. We will give you reasonable notice of any changes to the cap.

2.9.5 The variable nature of Octopus Tracker means any prediction of future costs will be inaccurate and historical data will not predict future performance. Octopus Tracker is a smart import tariff that allows you to unlock the cheaper and greener benefits of using energy according to wholesale costs. Sometimes peaks may be higher, sometimes lower. If you wish to leave the Octopus Tracker tariff, you will always be able to switch to one of our other fairly priced standard tariffs.

2.9.6 It may take up to two weeks to leave Octopus Tracker, and after leaving, you'll need to wait 9 months before switching back to Tracker, but would be able to sign up to any of our other tariffs that you are eligible for instead.’

I am not saying that the terms and conditions are applied consistently by CS staff but the above are what Octopus has published.

2.9.3 - they can vary the standing charge???  Is that a first?
