Thanks everyone, I love all the food talk. I do find I avoid avocados and nuts, etc. at the moment, but only because I have 1400 calories a day and I try to get as much real food as I can while leaving room for some bad things (you all know about my biscuit addiction and chocolate eating tendencies 😬). Lots of padding out of meals with onions and mushroom’s works fairly well. I have noticed from my calorie tracker that when I go into the macros I exceed carbs and usually hit 150% there….and that’s with limited and often no bread. I’m not sure how I can get that down while still staying under calories. It’s always hard when you are cooking for someone else too, so often I have the same, just weighed and measured and tracked. Do you have any good tips for reducing carbs @Humdinger1 (please don’t say no biscuits 😘)?@Naomim get the dungarees! We are our own worst critics and I’m sure you’d look fabulous in them. I am trying to move to wearing things that make me happy…I’m clearly steering myself quickly towards the ‘I shall wear purple’ stage of life prematurely 🤣Not all who wander are lost - J.R.R.Tolkien

@WinterWarrior if you have a carb binge, have a walk within 2 hours: even 10-15 mins will help regulate blood sugar levels and avoid a spike that piles on the weight. I know it's incredibly hard as fought with it myself.. but calorie counting doesn't help in my view and according to many medical (not marketing!) experts. It sets us up to fail, keeping us in thrall to the systems that set us up to fail in the first place. Have you tried ground nuts, dash of cream and sprinkling of unsweetened cocoa powder? No carb at all; that is my go-to when I want a treat. Love Humdinger xx

I don't have diabetes but both my parents have it as well as other lifestyle inflicted chronic diseases, and I have become obsessed with trying to prevent them for myself so I always look into health and nutrition info. Last summer I came across the unusual concept that diabetes is caused by fat, not carbs. High blood sugar seems to be not the cause but the result of too much fat in our tissues not allowing the cells use the glucose we eat, and thus the glucose stays in our blood stream.
A diet low on carb would definitely help as there's little sugar put in the blood stream.
Of course not all carbs are the same (sorry WW! 🍪), but I've been eating a diet based on complex carbs/starches for almost a year now and I have not put on weight or had any difficulties maintaining. I don't count calories and I stuff my face with potatoes and rice every single day. I just eat lots of good food that is naturally low in calories. I love potatoes and rice but I've been avoiding them my whole life thinking they were bad for my weight, turns out they're great as long as I don't cover them in cheese! 😁

Interesting points - especially the one about the 90s being 10 years ago - agree completely.
We are having a celebratory meal this evening - tapas a la me, so very few heavy carbs - lots of protein and full fat halloumi.
(Lets not even mention the prosecco or black forest gateau that accidentally fell into the trolley when I wasn't looking.)My mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese
