My fixed price contract was due to end in December this year. After this morning's price hike email I decided to shop around and have this evening switched to another provider. I've now received an email from TalkTalk advising me that it will cost me £92.32 in early exit fees.
I’d posted about this too. Update is that even though I had it confirmed byTalkTalk customer services I would not be charged an early exit fee if I switched before 8 April.  My new service started on 24th March & TalkTalk turned off their service at 9.20pm the night before!!

I’ve just got my closing bill with £89.41 exit fee on there, so I’ve quickly cancelled my direct debit & hope I’m not too late to cancel the payment.  I’m absolutely furious, I’ve kicked off big time in writing to their complaints dept but don’t expect to hear anything.

Bullyboy tactics to retain customers - absolutely disgraceful.

I would suggest raising a compliant via email to them via resolver and mention you will go to the ombudsman if needed.

What the email actually stated was if you wanted to leave WITHOUT any penalties was to contact them before 8th April (my date) and tell them.
If you had done that you would have been transferred to retensions where they would have tried to persuade you to stay with a better deal.
If you refused their deal you are perfectly free to leave TT without any penalties because you have informed them of your intension to leave.

I got a better faster speed cheaper monthly deal and so I choose to stay.
Anyone who bothered to inform them of their intension to leave could have got a better deal.
    No brainer,

I wonder how many other people are going to get hit with cancellation fees because they didn't read the email from TalkTalk?  Difficult to argue your way out of this one.

I'm delighted with this latest opportunity to talk with the Talk Talk retentions team. I've been offered £20 for 18 months with three months free although I'll have to deal with the April 22 inflation increase, adding an expected 80p per month for the last 6 months.

If anyone wants details of competitors' prices to help with haggling with the retention team, https://broadband.quidco.com/ has the best deals for the likes of Vodafone and Virgin Mobile that I can see.

I've no idea what Talk Talk were thinking when they threatened to increase prices.

They achieved their aim, simply because the vast majority of people will have just accepted the increase.

After receiving the increase notification I did as TT instructed and phoned them. I told them of my intention to leave. They didn't transfer me to retentions or offer me a better deal and simply said I could leave without exit fees within the allotted time frame. After starting the switch to Shell, I received a couple of 'shots across the bow' in the way of letters stating the early leaving fees of £108 and asking me to reconsider. Knowing how TT can operate, I went onto web chat to firm up the situation regarding exit fees. I was told again "no exit fees during the stated time frame." I obtained a transcript of the conversation and kept it as evidence.

The day before the switch I received a nice letter from TT waiving all fees and not requiring return of equipment and hoping I might return to them in the future.

On the day of the switch at about 8pm (was starting to worry) I lost broadband for about 10 minutes before it returned to normal. Speeds were very slightly up on the previous connection which I put down to the new router from Shell Energy.

Whilst monitoring the new connection it was surprising to note that the ISP was still TT (I think I'm right in thinking only TT,BT, Sky and Virgin control the infrastructure). So it's competition and choice, but not as we perceive it.

BT owns Openreach who supplies TT, Sky, Shell etc.,
Plusnet is also owned by BT.

Virgin has cable and have their own network.

Thanks for all the detail on this most informative thread.  I too received the email notifying a £2/month price hike.  With three months left of my 18 month Faster Fibre contract, I have spoken to Retentions and have agreed a new 18 month contract from today, £21/month for Fibre 35 broadband and line rental, guaranteed no exit fees for leaving the current contract early.  This is £1/month less than I had been paying and I'm quite happy with that.

The trouble with a new TalkTalk 18 month contract is that it could now be subjected to price increases because the fixed pricing contract has been dropped.

The trouble with TT is when you look elsewhere it`s still the cheapest provider.
All the others have done exactly the same as TT,
The new 18 month TT contract clearly states it`s a fixed price for the duration with an increase of 3.7% plus inflation in April 2022.

If TT want to renege on it`s promise (again) of no increases during the fixed term, then they have to give you the chance to leave without penalty.
Which is what they have just done.

Anyone who took the trouble to read the notification email about the increase and their options, could have ended up, as many of us have done, by getting a new, cheaper, better deal than we had before.
