TalkTalk price hike.

Options
Martin states in his news letter recent new contracts prior the 1st March will not be effected by £2 per month increase.
I signed up for new 18 month contract 2 weeks ago, fixed at £22 for term of contract with no price increases.
But yesterday got email from TalkTalk confirming the £2 price hike?
There appears to be some talk on TT forum that hidden in small print there is a clause that says they can increase prices under certain circumstances and demand due the Covid crises has allowed them to do this, who is right TT or Martin?

    It does say .....
Many broadband customers will be hit by price hikes of £2 a month (£24 a year). This will affect all broadband customers except the following who won't face any rise:

    - Customers who took out a Fibre 35 or Fibre 65 tariff between 10 November 2020 and 1 March 2021.

So it looks like you are one of the lucky ones who won't be affected.
  • I had a similar email from TT yesterday regarding the £2 price increase. I viewed my archive emails I received from them in June last year, at the time I renewed my contract with them. The advertised price of £19.95 for "Faster Fibre" (not always) included the strapline
"No price rises - unlike Sky, Virgin and BT, we won’t raise your broadband prices mid contract". I just wondered if this is considered misrepresentation under the Trade Descriptions Act? They are after all selling a service and boldly stating something which is, and I choose the word carefully, incorrect. If they are allowed to proceed with this unchallenged, they really do have us all by the short and curlies. It potentially means they can change your contract mid term and increase the price with the added bonus of knowing they can charge us for early termination of current contract. Although on this occasion they do allow leaving for another provider without penalty until 1st April. Are there any Legal Eagles out there who can confirm what they are doing is legal?

Ofcom rules re price rise in contract .
Provider must give you 30 days to cancel Penalty free by contacting the ISP .

(we won’t raise your broadband prices mid contract".)
Check t&c of your contract and complain to TT .

Increase successfully challenged. They won’t agree to cancel the increase (to a contract that is very clearly shown to be fixed in price) but they have agreed to credit the account with the additional amount charged.

Exactly the same net effect from my standpoint, but I’ll never trust these crooks again to stick to the terms of a contract. Must have been following the example of Johnson’s government.

I phoned up to cancel after receiving the email. It stated that I could leave penalty free due to the price increase. They put me through to retentions and I now pay less than I was paying before!

Now that is my idea of a price rise.

Which is the best phone number to get hold of Retentions? (I assume calling any TalkTalk number is free from a TT landline?)

That was the outcome of the last price increase for me - well worth trying. Took the best part of an hour via online chat, but that way you do get written evidence of what’s been agreed - essential when dealing with this lot.

I’ll be renegotiating in a few months time, but the current deal’s going to be impossible to match, sadly. It’s way below market rates, even for TalkTalk.
  • I too received a £2 increase on my fixed price contract which should run until Jan 2022. I phoned to cancel my account . TalkTalk have now given me a £2 credit every month until my contract runs out.  I phoned them on 0345 172 0046

My fixed price contract was due to end in December this year. After this morning's price hike email I decided to shop around and have this evening switched to another provider. I've now received an email from TalkTalk advising me that it will cost me £92.32 in early exit fees.

After being with them for several years, and out of minimum contract - I pushed the button to move to another provider a few days ago - now receiving emails asking me to stay, but that won't be happening. There have been too many 'rises' recently - and we are too accepting of them as the majority.
