Well just having a look at your payments compared to usage it looks like you have been underpaying for your usage. Let’s ignore eon, as they were smart metering you and you seem to have paid slightly more than you owed but that’s not taking into consideration the other house bills you paid which they probably included in their calculations, so just take that as settled as they were smart metering you.
it is edf where the problems lie. Because the electricity readings were all estimated your consumption as it stands sits at £1800.89 whilst you have paid £1170 meaning you owe £630.89.
now you need to see if you can get an accurate meter reading to see if you can contest the 8751 and bring it down to a more reasonable 6417 then you would only have to pay edf 168.07 to settle the bill, which is more manageable
with regards to shell we can’t comment about the electricity. You are going to have to pay a small fortune to catch up with your gas use so it’s accurate. The direct debits you’ve paid to date cover the total of the gas consumption (approx £515) so once electricity figures come back, you will have to pay extra to shell to make up that short fall in electricity. (I reckon approx £200)
Hope that makes sense.
things for you to do now:
1.ensure you get the meter situation fixed ASAP. You need working meters. Hopefully they can somehow find out what your accurate elec meter reading is (which will make everything easier) if they can’t don’t worry.....
2. Once 1 is sorted negotiate with edf regarding your closing reading. Do not accept 8751. Show them the table I made for you with readings you had for eon, to show them your annual consumption is approx 5000. (And send the bills as evidence) Your closing reading should be around the 6417 mark.
3.settle up the bill with edf. You will owe them some money, I think around £168.
4. TAKE METER READINGS MONTHLY AND SUBMIT TO SUPPLIER SO THIS DOESNT HAPPEN AGAIN
5. Keep some money aside as I suspect your extra electricity cost to shell will be in the region of £200
hope that all makes sense, we got there eventually!!2 -

I will let you know the outcome. Again youve been godsend to us0 -
I'm pleased to have been of help. I have had my energy on the spreadsheets since 1983, from before privatisation and through umpteen changes of supplier. Never let me down. Always been one step ahead of the energy company. If I can say one positive thing about your experience, both of your supplier changes were good moves. In both cases the daily standing charges, and the pence per kWh went down! Please come back with the outcome. There have been quite a few cases with long complex threads like your own, when many forumites have given all sorts of advice, and then it goes quiet. Probably the OP used the advice, sorted everything out, and just got on with his life, but it would be nice to know.0

Yes, you’re most welcome. Glad to have been of help
hope you get the outcome you want.
please do let us know what happens, I mirror jbuchanangb’s comments that so many people come asking for help then never tell us what happened. (Which becomes so frustrating, as often we are very patient trying to get blood out of a stone to try and help when info is not forthcoming, then never hear if our advice has done the trick!)
good luck!0 -
Will 100% let you guys know the outcome, you've been a great help. Can't thank you enough0

Hi.all,
Smart meter engineer came out & was unable to get a reading..he said it's impossible as it is blank screen. He also stated thats all he's been having the last few months is houses asking him this as they been told they can get the readings from faulty meters?
Guess that's an absolute gutter!!
So on to number 2 now....
I'm going to ring EDF weekend & tell them that the meter has been faulty since day one & dispute the bill. I've already briefly spoken to them after the last bill & the advisor on phone even said it's high. So hopefully I will not have a big problem.
Will keep you updated . Thanks again

let us know how it goes.Did the meter guy change your meter to a new working smart meter?0 -
Use the numbers from the EON era to propose a closing reading to EDF, A suggested value has been previously provided. Obviously it is impossible for Shell to have an opening reading, and their meter reader can confirm it. So use the readings from the EON Era to propose a figure for consumption from the date they took over (without a meter reading), until now. Hopefully the meter guy has fitted a new meter. If not Shell will have to get that done ASAP. Until that is done, you are in a strong position with all your numbers from the EON era. You can provide evidence of your normal consumption levels at all times of year, and ask Shell to bill you on suitably calculated estimates.

@niktheguru @jbuchanangb
Sorry guys for the delayed reply, it started to become a disaster. Phoned EDF constantly & was told that the readings are too high & it be sorted but kept turning out to be dead end. It got to the stage of debt collection letters & I was still being ignored.
In the end around 3 weeks ago I found an EDF complaints telephone number & it rung twice & straight through to a gentleman that has assured me its going to be sorted. He stopped all debt collection letters & looked into my account. He actually seen that Shell originally gave them a reading of 4570 but then changed it to the high reading that the final bill was based on. So this reading is even lower than what the estimated you guys worked out, which I guess is even better? So he's been back to Shell & asked them to change this reading back as it's incorrect. He's pretty confident they will agree. He's checking in with me every week to update me with the complaint case.
It looks like we are getting there.
Again can't stress how thankful I am for all you're help with this. A lot would look at my dilemma & think I deserve to pay it all for being so stupid. But you've had the patience to guide me in the right direction.0 -
Sounds like a great result, well done. Let us know how it completes!0
