Hello all, everyone seems to be flying high on here.Out today several flat batteries from the xmas lights. 3 plastic cover thingys from the xmas tree that have never been used and kept in the tree box for at least the last 4 years. Why didn't I get rid before now ? Into the recycling, a coffee jar, a milk carton, a softener bottle, a cardboard box from some smellies bought for me as a present and another box from DH's meds.nanFailure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently14

Morning all and Happy New Year. Just catching up as I took Christmas off and didn't really want to look at a computer screen so have been MIA.
Started the decluttering just before Christmas but going to count it as part of 2021:
items 1-55) various items for the dump and charity shop which have been accumulating on the landing for months
items 56-118) various makeup bits: I used to have an issue with buying lots of toiletries and makeup and hoarding it all. In 2019 I decided to not buy anything and managed to keep that going but never actually took stock of what I did have. Now have a lovely spreadsheet with it all on (yes I still have over 300 items...) and I either threw away stuff that had gone bad or have donated unused stuff to friends (as Christmas extras) and shelters where I can.
That's just the start and have so much more to go through but feeling optimistic that 2021 can be the year I get most of the house sorted!Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 201717 -
So far this morning I have decluttered the last of my sanity trying to get get the girls off with homeschooling. They are now both in lessons. This means I haven't moved from the table much.
I wasn't going to count the normal rubbish, just the stuff I've hoarded but as the 2 potato sacks have been sat in the kitchen for weeks, both with tiny little potatoes in that I really didn't want to peel, I'm going to count them. The potatoes are now in the beef stew for dinner.
Lots more emails deleted, back to December 19 now.

Good afternoon everyone and a belated happy new year...
right.....my decluttering mission begins today. Not going to count individual items. So today one black bin liner half filled with tatty Christmas decorations I no longer want and assorted bits and bobs. It's a start innit.😉😂14 -
Hi All, joining this thread hoping for the motivation to clear the clutter in my house. Also in my garden, sheds and garage. I've been living here a couple of years, having moved from somewhere much bigger and despite spending months before moving getting rid off belongings, I still have way too much stuff! This was my parent's house and most a lot of the clutter in the garage and one of the sheds and the loft was theirs.
I've had a stressy couple of years, including a car accident which left me able to do very little all last year, so hardly any progress was made in organising this place. I've also lost a lot of confidence and energy since the accident but living in this muddle isn't helping. Getting busy sorting what I can will hopefully make a difference to my home and my health. Planning to report in regularly and be inspired by other posters success.15 -
Good afternoon all, this thread has given me more motivation to get organised in the house.
when we locked down in March I literally had enough food for about 2 days and felt like I had failed my family not having anything in the cupboards.... since then I have purchased a little extra every shopping trip and now my cupboards and freezer are all a crowded disorganised mess! ( including the cupboard under the stairs that was shoe storage and is now also home to Excess tins, sparkling water and washing powder)I had kept most of my daughters old clothes and toys in the hope we would have another baby but I have let go of that hope now, and started to let go of those belongings that will be put to better use by someone else.
my husband is far more of a hoarder than me but I persuaded him at long last to sort a small pile of clothes to go to charity or recycling (whichever becomes available)
So my plan
1. eat out of the cupboards and freezer ( today I just shopped for milk fruit veg and bread)
2. sort out my daughters old stash of toys and clothes and give to charity / nursery / find a new home
3. Reorganise our wardrobe space now my husband has let go of some old clothes
4. Try not to buy any more toiletries until what we have is used up (we also got some for Christmas)
5. Dare to look in the loft - if we haven’t needed it since we moved in 3 and a half years ago do we still need it?
6. Decide what to do with old books and cds - any suggestions on selling these in bulk would be greatly appreciated.
once I have done all this I hope it will be easier to keep on top of the cleaning!14 -
1. KITCHEN WILL CONTINUE TO BE LEFT CLEAN & TIDY EVERY NIGHT2. JUST DO ONE THING EVERY DAY (courtesy of bit_by_bit) OTHER THAN DAY TO DAY CLEANING & DECLUTTERING
3. CLEAN ONE ROOM (TOP TO BOTTOM) EVERY MONTH (hopefully 3 weekly by the end of the year)Well I remembered to set the alarm 🙂 just forgot to get up 😞 Hopefully I will manage both tomorrow 🤞
It is a wet, miserably cold day - not helped by the rather stiff wind 🥶
DH was up, bathed & out of the house by 10:30 ish - donating blood as quite rare blood group. DSis went out a short while ago to post her friend’s Christmas present 🙄 & do a bit of shopping.
As for me, well I have aired the bed & now remade (just involved fluffing the pillows & pulling up the duvet 😉, watered the indoor plants, washed up the few bits generated this morning & cleared down a couple of episodes of Heroes. Earnest is only making fleeting visits at the moment 😢
DH phoned & is on his way home, DSis is back. Apparently MrA has a sale of pots & pans - 50% off and the woman in front of her in the checkout queue had a large trolley full. The cynic in me automatically thought that she is probably going to sell them on at full price 😞
I am 2 pages behind in cheerleading, so I am diving straight in 😉
Well Done Black_Saturn 👏 I especially admire your restraint in dealing with your OH 😉😉 not sure I would be so phlegmatic 😉
Good work villagelife 👏 Perhaps we should have a ‘bus’ for the ‘awkward’ OHs & DHs - once it is full we could then drive it away to a ‘Decluttering Boot Camp’ - no electricity, no gadgets etc & fending for themselves? 😉😉
Good luck lynnsey30 🤞great ideas from our fellow declutterers 👏
Definitely not pathetic ScarletRibbons just incredibly MSE & also eco friendly 👏 Fewer plastic bottles, fewer chemicals - I am so impressed that I am awarding you a medal 🏅🙂
Absolutely balabooberlies 🙂pamsdish, I go the other way using hotel shower gels in the bath 😉
Well done the_cross_rabbit 👏
Excellent work vulpix 👏 Also thank you so much for the information re broken jewellery - very useful & lovely that a charity has found a niche to earn a few more £. I do like your ‘pounds lost, pounds gained’
Great work Viking_mfw 👏 & rather pleased that you have managed to ‘adjust’ your DH’s attitude 😉
Good work Nicnak 👏 A new habit formed 👏

1) favourite maternity top packed for posting to sister
2) old glasses case packed for posting to MIL
3) also sending one a day aspirin to MIL
4) 3 books to CS bag (on another day might count separately!)
10/465
Over the last few days I've decluttered:
1: Last year's calendar
2-4: 2 beer bottles & 1 wine bottle (all empty)
5-6: Both green bins, very full (not been emptied since mid November)
7: Over 1000 emails (counted as 1 'sitting')
8-9: 1/2 bag each coconut & icing sugar to make coconut ice, took half to work
10-11: 2 magazine subscriptions, saving around £8.50 a month
12-13: 2 online group subscriptions, saving another £40 a month!
14: LO cheese & onion tart for my lunch
Not too bad for a start, sure there were more things but this is what I remembered. Now writing down as I declutter/chuck/clean/give away as appropriate. Not at work tomorrow & kids going back to school (I hope!), so planning a bit more throwing away. Also need to photograph the attic - need a reminder of how bad it is right now so that I don't let it build up to such a mess again!
A xo
