The standing charge covers more than just owning the meter and includes:
- using and maintaining the energy networks, wires and pipes that carry gas and electricity across the country to your home
- keeping your home connected to the energy network
- carrying out meter readings
- payments towards government initiatives that help vulnerable households, and reduce CO2 emissions.
If a supplier goes bust because of prices but had a really cheap standing charge, then maybe there is a reason why most other suppliers don't offer a SC that cheap.0 -

Brilliant customer service.
In the end there are lots of costs that you dont actually see but contribute to getting the supply to you and the fairest way is for everyone to share a little bit.
It's a bit like owning a car, the cost of fuel is a lot less than the standing costs of owning, maintaining, road fund licence and insurance which unfortunately you can't share with everyone else in the streetNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Sally is correct about the standing charge IMHO it should be the same daily charge whoever you are with,.
Some companies I agree set the standing charge to low but many see it as a way of making their unit costs artificially low
Me being a low user would rather pay a bit more per unit than a high standing charge0 -
If you provided your own meter then presumably there would have to be some procedure to have it certified, and you'd have to pay. It would also have to be installed and sealed, otherwise you could remove it, bypass it or fiddle the readings. More costs for you to pay. Then what happens if it goes wrong, e.g. it stops recording or overcharges? Who sorts that out and how is your usage determined? It's not impossible (in fact I believe that in theory you have a right to do this), but I doubt very much whether it would be cheaper. It might be a Get Out Of Jail card to escape from a smart meter or if you are convinced that the supplier's meter is overcharging, but as a way of lowing the standing charge it's definitely a non-starter.0

To those trying very hard to justify increasingly higher standing charges https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/ofgem-publications/141606 - Page 3"This paper proposes capping just the standing charge. Energy suppliers levy an average of £156 p.a.for this, whereas the costs they incur related to it are approx.£100 lower at just£60 p.a"And to those who would like to see Energy Companies charge same Standing Charge as easier to compare just Kwh rates Ofgem made exactly that proposal/consultation approx 2 years ago suggesting a figure of 25p per day, very low users and maybe low users would lose out if that proposal was implemented1

Costa_del_Brid said:Read your meters tomorrow and make a note of them. Ofgem will announce tomorrow who our supplier is and it will be this company who will want the readings. We then have to wait for this supplier to contact us and to tell us when the Deemed Tariff starts. I will be reading my meter every day from tomorrow as reading the Tonik thread, I want to upto date readings/figures as it could be a bumpy ride for the next few weeks.
In the months before Tonik failed they had migrated their billing over to a new system. It had been a complete shambles, with many users not receiving a bill for 6 month or more! The administrators and Ofgem appointed supplier had to try and make sense of all of this... Tonik's data was all over the place and incomplete.
Yorkshire Energy aren't in the same position. Their billing system is excellent so hopefully all their data should be there without issue.0 -

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple1 -
Costa_del_Brid said:That's what I did and continue to tariff crunch by what you have said Gerry1. I replied to Philw who suggested he would like separate suppliers to be shown as well on comparison sites and not for him to work it out and that's how I answered him.
I agree it's so easy to do, if I can do it anyone can.
It's annoying they make you do it.0 -
phillw I agree its more work to do it manually as you will need to make a note of the Tariff prices though CAB has all the information anyone requires. I have only showed dual fuel Tariffs though click on the more information and the Supplier price is broken down to show how much Gas costs and Electric costs and here separate fuel Tariffs can then be worked out, this is where I get my information from and the outdated examples I showed on 2nd December were done this way. It is easy to do.
