I deliberately chose to cancel my DD due on 4th December as my bill for that date still showed a fairly healthy credit balance of £64 (based on monthly readings submitted on 3rd December) so I know that debt will be coming to me (via SP) rather than to YE administrators once the YE accounts are finalised.
My last bill was 7 days before SP took over and I was in credit by 75% of the monthly charge. As long as the administrators can cope with failed and recalled payments then I don't see why I need to have the money sitting in their account for 6 months.

I haven't decided on the timing for my switch away from SP, their customer service said that a switch would probably be rejected at the moment because I don't have an account setup but due to YE only have 74k customers it should be setup in 7 to 10 working days. If an energy provider isn't going to do anything until the 14 day cooling off period, then it should be fine to start one now. If it fails then they can wait 10 days and try again. Ideally I'd time it so that the first time they try is the day the account has been setup. Worst case would be if the account was setup a day after as I'd have another 9 days. But if I wait until I'm told then it's an extra 14 days on their expensive tariff.

If I wait then the good deals might all be gone.
  • Hi guys,
Not read all the thread sorry, but I was with YE and started a switch with OVO on 10th November that completed on the 30th.
Then found out the YE are ceasing trading and customers (and supposedly debt/credit) moving to SP.
I've got over £300 credit with YE, rang YE as soon as I found out and was told that the new supplier would supply my final bill etc. After ringing SP was told that they aren't dealing with this as I've already switched I'm not their customer. I argued that I had credit with YE and that my final bill hadn't been produced so as far as I was aware SP was liable for that. But she kept repeating the same thread.

I noticed someone else had the same sort of conversation with SP, does anyone know what's going to happen? Is this an ofgem issue, or do I have to wait for the administrators to sort themselves out?

On the 11th November I got an email to say that my subscription was cancelled with them, but I notice on my account that there is a DD due to be taken in December.

They are responsible to ensure that you get your credit back however if you'd already left YE when they went bust you wont get transferred to SP's books so you'll have to wait until the administrator sorts it all out which can (adn usually does) take several months - it took me four months and threatening letters to Utilita to get my £30 back from Eversmart and some people are still getting bills from when they went bust in September 2019.

You need to keep up the pressure and make sure you've got all your bills, statements and bank statements just in case you end up fighting them but bear in mind they are more concerned about sorting out the customer who transferred than those who are creditors so it could be a long haul.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

I think that he created dd indemnity. I have not cancelled the did but nor have I supplied SP with my bank details as their site didn’t have the secure padlock on it.
My understanding is that claiming on DD indemnity automatically cancels the DD and there is no way round that, at least that is what has happened when I've done it.
I'm kinda tempted to get the DD payment back from the 2nd, I'm not that much in credit (although enough to cover my last bill)
I was given the choice, during the call, of whether to cancel the DD or not. I chose not to but, on refelection, have now cancelled it.
  • Am I mistaken or is SP exclusive tariff for YE customers, electric 16.728 s/c 22.89, gas 2.872 s/c 26.07?
If yes, they're certainly exclusive and I'll be off the moment my SP account is confirmed.......for me that would be a 23% price hike

Depends on your region (and what tariff you were on with YE as to % uplift) but that looks about right.  I'm Southern area so slightly lower but in the same ball park...my increase is about 23%.

But hey it's a 'competitive' tariff (or so they said 😅)

My DD has been taken from my account this morning as if nothing had happened. I'm not too bothered by this - although I confess it was not what I would have expected - as I do owe them more than half the sum they've taken so that takes care of my final bill, and provided the surplus is either refunded or sent on to SP, that's fair enough. I find the best way to have an easy life with energy suppliers is not to interfere in what must be a largely automated process. I'm assuming that by the time we get to January these DDs will have stopped. If by any chance that doesn't  happen, I shall review my strategy!

My advice ? CANCEL the DD now !!! There is a danger that the DD taken by "Yorkshire Energy" this morning ,will vanish into a black hole - as they don't exist as an entity it's pot luck whether the money gets allocated to your account or not.
In fact ,I personally would claw back that payment under the DD guarantee and wait for the administrators to seek the money owed. Too many cases of bills being significantly wrong when raised by the administrators trying to sort out defunct Companies' accounts.
  • Agree with all that brewerdave says
Anyone know how much longer we will be waiting for the email from SP ?

SP is asking for my meter readings which is understandable. Do you think they will have to honour my existing unit rates until such time as I provide it? Ie the longer I hold out the longer I stay on lower rate...?!
