So how did you get this info?  Would have been nice to have had an email or something rather than finding out here (although glad you have posted it here).

Just had an email from British Gas Rewards re 100 free energy days for switching to them. Oooh very timely I thought given situation with YE, as even though BG will no doubt be much more expensive 100 free days would make it competitive.......until I read the T&Cs.  Basically works out to about 30 full days of Electric if you are dual fuel...so works about to about 4% discount in our case.  Umm think I'll pass on that one.

Read your meter today and download any bills or statements if the website is still operating as it's a lot easier to sort out any future aggro if you have your own info and data to hand.

Likewise make sure to take a reading on Saturday when the SoLR is announced and I'd suggest that taking weekly readings until the dust has settled is a good idea as well.

I've been with three bust suppliers so far and having all the data to hand has made the transition and baling out from an expensive (Octopus) or useless (Utilita) SoLR so much easier.

Good tips but I'd also say take a photo of the meters (with a date stamp if poss) if you can as well...better to have as much evidence to hand as possible.
  • Anyone with Yorkshire Energy should read the post re Tonik Energy to see what has happened over the last few weeks and beware. Just pray that Scottish Power are not appointed SoLR. But don't try to switch now it will only complicate things

If it helps anyone to keep their meter readings records if you log on and go to the Your Tariff section and on the left there are tabs that allow to you see all your Electricity readings in a list and also one to see all your gas readings. Worth printing those.

Let me know who you're going to switch to when you decide.....so I can avoid them 😂

Being serious for a minute ...how long after the SoLR has been appointed is it safe to start a switch away as it's pretty much a foregone conclusion their tariff won't be competitive ?

Hope it's a sell-off, as then the buyer will have to honour the T&C's and prices of the existing contracts - If it goes down the Supplier of Last Resort route we're stuck with whatever the new suppliers offer
Sadly, Ofgem says it's the SoLR route.
    Great shame, Yorkshire were good.
I'm assuming under SoLR, I can still switch in January, when I reach the final 49 days of my fixed term of YE account? I'm guessing that any new supplier will just dump us on the Standard Variable?

Edit: I've just read the SoLR Guidance on Ofgem's site. The new supplier needs to write to us once appointed, advising they are our new supplier under deemed contract. They confirm their rates, and advise that we can switch. God know what the timescales are for all this.
I was with One Select who went down just before Xmas 2018 - got transferred to Together Energy and escaped as soon as I could - but it wasn't til 17th Feb 2019 that I got away. I also cancelled my DD with One Select which proved the right thing to do ,as customers of Together are STILL trying to sort out their accounts.

I initiated a switch away from YE this morning before all this happened.

I got the usual monthly email this morning saying submit your meter readings which I did but when I got the bill like an hour later I noticed they had increased my prices without telling me. So I emailed them but also started a switch as thought I may as well as the prices are going up.
I got a response to my email about the price rise at 11:40am saying to check my spam folder. I know I never received an emailed from them about it so replied and then at 16:14 got a response saying they had ceased trading.
  • A lot of the problems of the Tonik SoLR happened because of how bad the data was at Tonik's end, making the job for Scottish Power 10 times harder than it should have been. Although Scottish Power should have tried more to be proactive at contacting customers.

Yorkshire Energy doesn't have the billing issues that Tonik did and only failed because they priced themselves way too cheaply and the investment dried up. Even if Scottish Power was appointed you shouldn't have to worry as it should be as bad as the Tonik fiasco.

That being said, as Scottish Power are still dealing with Tonik, Ofgem are highly unlikely to give the customers to them. You will also get to avoid Utilita and Together Energy, Utilita because of the Smart meter final order and Together for the similar reason as Scottish Power.

Unless someone new comes in for them you're likely to end up with either Octopus, EDF, OVO or British Gas.
