Received my final YE bill last night. Correct amount down to the penny. Hopefully my ~£40 credit should be transferred to SP before they issue a final bill since I am now with symbio.

Despite giving my bank details to SP ages ago, and despite the DD showing on my bank account, I have just had a conversation with SP, and the lady told me I was still not set up for DD, because nobody has done than yet.
She said it *should* have been "sent off", whatever that means, and that she has now done that. I asked about the date for the DD payment, but she said she couldn't tell me yet because it takes a week to set it up. I asked how I would know when it was completed. She said I would have to check that myself. I asked if I would be sent confirmation of the completion, and the date that payments would be taken by DD. She said no, I won't get an email or any confirmation, but I might be able to see it on my online account somewhere. I asked where. She said she didn't know, but maybe if I looked at the balance.
Can someone here please tell me, exactly what is supposed to happen when setting up a DD with SP? Do they confirm it? Where can I see this on the online account, if anywhere?
Maybe I know now why it is worth switching away from SP, even if it isn't cheaper.

It will show in a panel on your online account, but this disappears once you start a switch away from SP (it appears they stop collecting once you start a switch). The best thing to do is check your online banking to see when it appears. The earliest collection date is 4 working days after it is set up.

You did well to speak to someone at SP. I never have, but I won't wait on the phone for more than 10 minutes. I have more success making contact on Twitter.

Once SP have set the DD up, there should be a record of it in your account details at your bank. Are you online or manual?
The reference number quoted there should also be your SP account number. Have you set SP up online or in the app? If so, the details should also be accessible from the control panel in terms of value (ideally the same as your bank) and day of the month. I say 'should' because, of course, this is SP we are talking about, and nothing should be taken for granted. Everything should be double checked.

Come back if anything else occurs.
  • I'm all sorted with YE and final account. I'm probably one of the few with a debit balance rather than credit, because I cancelled my direct debit immediately last December. SP asked me to send a copy of the YE Final, so they could ensure that the YE closing readings were the SP opening ones, which I did, digitally. They also asked me for meter readings up until yesterday.

Info is appearing piecemeal on the SP dashboard, and as soon as the loose ends are tied up, they won't see me for dust. Just dreading my SP bill now.

no, they still collect....my leccy goes 7 Feb and gas 11 feb, but they (SP) are still taking a DD on Monday, despite 1. my YE £238 credit due to come in, 2. I've not given SP any further readings after the e-mail on 7 Dec, 3. The opening reads for new suppliers will be SP closing reads, and 4. I'll owe SP around a tenner...

....but they're still taking a £95 DD on Monday, so 3 banking transactions instead of one (after they do my final bill and take said tenner by DD) :(
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I admire your optimism. I'd moved from YE and my final credit balance had been calculated before YE ceased trading. I haven't heard a word from SP, to date.
  • Absolutely raging. Just got a letter from Scottish power, £200 in debit. They set up a direct debit and haven’t taken anything, because that’s what a normal company does isn’t it? Not bother collecting the money. They haven’t given so much as a murmur to me, so didn’t know my supposed account number to login. They only got in touch cos I’m switching. I have £100 in ye credit and £70 in the bank they never bothered taking but it’s the principle. Will be glad to be shot of these jokers!

If it were a regulatory requirement then there is a case to be made for it coming off the final bills. Though, as you say, I won't be holding my breath.
My understanding is that SP (as the SoLR) would have to cover any shortfall once final billing is done, since our credit balances are protected. The challenge here would be getting that £30 onto our balance in the first place.
I think we'd be better whistling in the wind than thinking we could get £30 compo :D
I complained to them a couple of weeks ago, chanced my arm, asked for £30 per fuel, and got £60 credit straight away.
