So this morning I got a cheque from Scottish Power with my full refund from YE. The value of the cheque is the amount I was in credit on my final YE bill.

Scottish Power have not taken any money for what I will owe them for about 17 days worth of gas and electric. I guess they will chase me for that at some point.

I did not chase SP for the refund,

So my message is to contact the YE administrators like I said above and get your final bill. If anyone wants any help with that then PM me. Took about two weeks for me to get the refund from SP after getting my final bill.

If you only owe SP for about 17 days worth of energy, then that implies you switched to another supplier and SP never gained your supply, so you are in a different class than the majority of people, who became SP customers. It is not realistic for those who switched to SP to expect the same results as the few who were able to switch directly elsewhere (and were therefore treated as being in the process of a switch when YE failed).

Yes I transferred the morning before they ceased trading.

I guess what I am trying to say is if I had not chased I would still be waiting for the end result (repaid credit or credit added to account or several other options)

Agree those who escaped before SP were able to claim their supply should be querying the lack of a final bill, as the administrators should be prioritising the final bills of those who started a transfer before the block transfer of customers to SP.
You are probably right that you would not be in this position if you hadn't chased, as YE would probably have been unaware you were switching independently if your switch was started so close to the bitter end.

OK, so question now is, having finally got a fully functional account set up with SP, if I initiate a switch away from them straightaway (as they fully deserve), how will I get my YE credit balance back?

A switch will take 17-21 days to complete. After that you'll be waiting up to another 6 weeks for a final bill from SP. If YE issue your final bill during that time then the credit should be added to your final SP bill and if there is any left over after your energy charges at SP then it will be paid back to you by bank transfer if you still have a SP DD in place, otherwise by cheque.
If YE still hasn't issued your final bill by the time SP does, then any credit will be issued separately by cheque. This is an unlikely scenario, most likely we'll have final bills from YE by mid-February.

SP will pay you or add any credit to your SP account, once SP have passed your opening reading to YE Administrators (as the closing reading for YE, which they may have already done) and the Administrators have worked out your final bill and passed the information to SP.

As regards switching, there seems little point for me. The cheapest is eon, saves 55 quid a year compared to sp,  but that's with smart meters that I don't want. Next is avro at 28 quid per year saving. Just not worth the agro until my sp account is fully up and working and I have my ye credit back.

I get a different projection on the comparison sites to what SP expect my annual bill to be. I can't download my bill so I have no idea what usage they are projecting. The bill can't be right for the dates. Does anyone know how soon they will review our direct debit? I'm worried they will hike mine stupidly high.

Why do you think that switching from SP will affect the timescale for the repayment of your YE credit?
