EVs have a serious image problem especially to the demographic that enjoy cars and enjoy driving and is worst in the "affordable" range

Stupid little looking cars with  stupid names and there is very little input that makes you feel like you are driving.
Just press one pedal and steer

The cost of driving and having fun doing so rarely comes into it -- so the saving a few £ a year isn't attractive at all to most car people

Those that do cars understand - those that don't never will

See, while I have an EV as my main car, I also have a motorbike, a 2014 Honda VFR1200F.
The car is to get from a to b as cheaply and efficiently as possible. The motorbike is for fun.

Years ago I loved cars, I had a 2002 vw golf R32 at one point, but then I rode a motorbike and all cars seem boring by comparison anyway.

As for the original poster, I'm paying £174/month with no deposit for a Zoe 52kW GT Line Rapid charge, with 10,000 miles a year.

So that's double what my 18-y-o diesel costs to buy, own & run, without your leccy charges....

You're comparing banger economics to a new car, to say nothing of average servicing and maintenance costs on your old banger.

My old banger (our 2nd car, a 2004 2.0 Passat) is kind of on its last legs, to say nothing of the £20/month road tax, and extortionate fuel costs, and when it dies we will probably buy a 2nd hand leaf, at the bottom of the price range. The monthly electric cost will be less than the tax on the Passat, with nothing to come near the petrol costs, and it will get me to work and back on days the wife needs the Zoe fine.

If your 18yr old diesel is costing less than £87 a month to buy, fuel, tax, mot, and service, you are doing well, so congrats, but it's kind of irrelevant.

Come 2030 you'll still be able to buy an 18 year old combustion engine banger. The only people it will affect are new car buyers, so that's the fair comparison. Your market of 18 year old bangers won't be impacted until 2048.

    Nope, until the next budget.

The chancellor might choose to stay with the established inflationary VED increases. Or he might choose to change the basis on which VED is calculated for CO2-banded cars, 2001-2017.

Well, yes, he could. Then again he might be smarter than Boris and remember that he could easily be voted out of office. After all, only one 'Green' MP has ever been elected in this country - and that was for Brighton, which speaks volumes.

On the whole though, I tend to agree. My pessimistic guess is that both parties will plod on with this 'Green' nonsense and won't back down until the general public are made aware of the absolute impossibility of A/ sufficient generation capacity ever being built to feed the numbers of Ecars (let alone the heat pumps!) they propose, B/ The impossibility of upgrading the transmission infrastructure to support them and C/ the dire consequences financially of even attempting such folly.
The longer this awakening takes to happen, the worse it will be.

If you've never driven an EV then you don't really know but they're actually really fun to drive. The instant torque and acceleration from stopped is insane. The MG5 is a pretty normal looking estate car, reminiscent of a Passat. 200 miles will cost me around £3.

Damned site more than that, most EV batteries only last 600 cycles, how much for a new battery with install? For me thats every 4 years about £22 per week needing a charge every 2 days (in summer!)
MG5 is a mere 150hp, pretty poor by standards 10 yr ago but with added weight. Tesla move granted.
From the MGE owners forum MG5 has 50kwh battery "Fast charging is likely to cost between £8 and £10" A cheap home charge rate of 13p/kwh is £6.5 + £8.8 battery life lost = 13.07p mile. Quick diesel 54mpg works out at 10.7p per mile.

It’s always the same “argument” - It only costs £xx to fill up and drive yy miles.

Most “car people” won’t give 2 hoots about any savings.

My last car was a heavily modified Impreza- that thing could shift, I was lucky to get 20mpg and the road tax was £500+ a year and I still wouldn’t have swapped for an EV to save money

Why you ask - because I dont need/want to save money - I want to spend my money on what I get enjoyment from and damn that thing would put a smile on anyone’s face
(and I liked the look of it as well)

And that’s ignoring the fact that any semi-decent EV (imo) would cost 10-20k more than I paid.

What about residual value you say - well, glad you asked, I lost 4K in 3 years on it

And it's still boring and slow compared to any half decent motorbike.

Cars are for travel, motorbikes are for fun. Hell, have a "fun" car for track use etc but who gives a crap on their daily commute or the trip to tesco?
