My problem of 'risking it' is that we're travelling to Heathrow from Merseyside. Quite the drive down the motorway!
You shouldn’t even be leaving the area - it’s Tier 3 you know (granted it’s advice, but go into the Royal Liverpool and see the effect this virus is having on the NHS before hand)
Overnight stay in the UK and abroad are banned from the 5th btw (according to various news sources via google)
    You probably aren’t going anywhere
You're absolutely correct in what you're saying. However, we'll be self-isolating before travelling. My wife works at home anyway and I am also part of the ONS survey so I get tested weekly and consequently will have a test during my isolation. Then the risk is only between airports, effectively eliminating the risks from where I am travelling from (eg. Merseyside vs Cornwall). We will also be paying to get tested several days after landing to ensure airport transmission did not occur.

I've just spoken to my travel insurer about whether I'm covered if I go on holiday before the lockdown starts. I've been told that people who went away before the announcement was made on Saturday are covered for the whole of their trip, but anyone who travels between then and when the enforcement comes into effect (5/11) won't be covered beyond that time as when they started their trip they knew the rules would change to no leisure travel.

I don't understand why we can't get tested and allowed to travel even if we are going on holiday, surely the only concern is that you are not passing on the virus so if you are clear you should not be banned from travelling, but AGAIN the Gov is completely incompetent in not introducing this step to enable people to travel abroad.   Especially now as testing is getting quite quick and cheap!

Agreed, though the government is probably more concerned about people bringing it back to the UK, having partied and mingled abroad.
I was going to somewhere with zero coronavirus and having a test before travel, so the risks where arguably lower than remaining here.

Well I was going to Costa Del Sol to my daughter's place and they hardly ever hear of anyone with Covid as there are mostly elderly people live there and they are very careful to obey all the rules.

They don't want NHS funded tests to be used by people planning to go on holiday, the problem with private tests is they are only available at limited locations so for a lot of people they would involve travelling outside their local area to get one, plus Boots' new offering (apparently available at 50 stores nationwide) costs £120 and that's the market leader on price, so for most people hoping to go to Europe that's a bit pricey.  The private tests creates a bit of a social divide as some people won't be able to afford them in addition to the cost of a holiday and some better off people will rather pay £120 extra then postpone their holiday.  The FCDO can't do one rule for middle class people and one rule for the working class.

Last time Tv showed police checking registration numbers on the motorway  and if the registered keeper address  was from out with the county they were stopping them and turning them back.

There has not been time for any decisions to be made at the moment as it was sprung on everybody.
Good luck with leased cars, that are registered to finance companies.

Have you not heard of Marbella and Malaga? They are on the Costa del Sol and they certainly aren't retirement towns. It's also under lockdown under 9th November.

A holiday is NOT essential travel - be prepared to be turned around

BBC: From Thursday, holidays both inside England and abroad will be banned until 2 December, as the government tries to stop a second wave of coronavirus from spreading.
Independant: Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed – including holidays in the UK and abroad.

guess I can ignore all the other "advice" when I go back into work in an NHS hospital tomorrow as well then

Yey - no more mask, no more wrecked hands from washing etc - don't worry, the patients will be fine

Turned around by who? Airport staff? I doubt it.
