It sounds like he needs/wants drama - wanting to demonstrate his devotion by turning down a guys weekend, building up your savings so you could leave at any point and of course the recent affair.
It's great that you are talking and working on things - if the above does turn out to be true, working out a way for him to get his "drama fix" might help. (But also him realising that if he doesn't have the drama, it's not ok to risk your health and marriage to get it.)
