  • Do you think the lanyard will suffice for much longer? They are readily available online for a mere £5 I believe.
I know someone that has bought one and is now telling everyone she meets where to to buy them from. What happens if the lanyards come more commonplace than the masks?
Said person above has lost their spouse to the virus so one may expect a little more caution.

There is no need to buy one as you can download an Exemption from face covering badge from the Government's own website for free.

  • How do do you claim proof of exemption, what does the list include, where do you obtain a lanyard?  Whilst I'm not saying that people with certain health conditions should be forced to wear a mask, there still seems to be lots other people who still refuse to use a mask because they don't want to, nobody likes wearing them.  I don't want to have a flu jab but all folks over aged 50 are advised to have one.   We have a small local One Stop nearby and the majority of shoppers don't think the same rules apply in this situation.   Need to have respect for the folk who have worked non stop throughout the pandemic and continue to so.   They may also have families who deserve protection.
Well both me and my boyfriend suffer asthma, and wearing a mask triggers an attack. We asked the doctor why this is and he said because when wearing a mask you are affectively breathing back in the air you already expelled. So we had to go on the government web site and apply for lanyards.

Ours we're free, but it depends where you obtain them. There are is also a wrb site called hidden disabilities and you can get them there.
If I could wear a mask I would, but I soon feel lack of air and an asthma attack becomes imminent.
  • Actually we keep getting people coming up to us asking where can they get the lanyards, I guess due to them struggling with a mask, or just simply hates wearing them.
I'm not actually convinced masks work because the infection rate has risen since wearing them became mandatory.
We we're doing better with the two metre rule and emphasis on washing hands, infection rates fell right off.

They do help by helping prevent infected people pass the virus to other people
The 2 metre rule and washing of hand etc etc should still be happening AS WELL, especially if you aren't wearing a mask for whatever reason
Infection rate has gone up as more people are "mingling" due to getting back to some semblance of normality - eg work, socialising, packing together on public transport
It is possible that wearing a mask gives people a sense of security and they tend to forget the basics
Agree with the above - it probably is a psychological response rather than physical

Covid was never going to disappear as if by magic. Community suppression is the only real weapon available currently. Remember to get your flu jabs.
Very true. Do you think the first lockdown was handled well though?
Not particularly. It didn't really achieve a lot. It was also massively disproportionate to wreck the country's economy when there was no end game or strategy planned for. It's obviously terribly sad that people die, but it's a fact of life and you only have to go back a few years to find that a bad flu year had nearly as many deaths in England as Covid, with no closing of the economy.

The answer surely should have been just shut all our doors for three weeks and kill the virus dead. And move on afterwards.
Sadly it's not that simple. You cannot just get rid of the virus like that. Certain things make it die down;  seasonality, immunity for example, but it's virtually impossible to eradicate it completely. They managed it with smallpox, but it took several hundred years and a vaccine. On the basis of the number of asymptomatic cases, it's basically impossible to eradicate. You could try and eliminate it from the country, but bearing in mind our place as part of the global network, that's also pretty tricky and you need all countries to be on the same page.

You can try and suppress it, but with no exit strategy, all you are doing is prolonging the lockdown type restrictions potentially for ever since it will just keep popping up again.  It's just delaying the inevitable but with the added downside of ruining the economy..

The only real way to deal with it is the same as we deal with flu - we learn to live with it. Certain people are more susceptible - the old and obese and they will need to be more careful, again the same as flu. Some years might be better, some might be worse but it will always be there, similar to flu seasons. In time a vaccine may be developed which might assist the vulnerable, again as in the flu jab.

Which means anyone can download one and start flashing it about claiming they are exempt.

It would be better if they were issued from a doctor.

That was what I intended my point to be, not realising you could get them free
