The days of taking a card imprint are well and truly over, which frees up the design opportunities of the card.
Not quite. When I was renting a car in Tobago a year or two ago, they were still taking card imprints using the click-clack card machine. Luckily my card was embossed (Nationwide CC) but I imagine those with a smooth card may have had difficulties.
  • I couldn't really care less what a card looks like. It could be sky blue pink with a yellow border as long as it functions properly.
What is this obsession with how your cards look like?
    Who mentioned obsession? Im
not a Celtic fan you know!!  It was for discussion, as I said when I started the thread. It's an awful looking card, in my opinion.

They had to revert to using the click clack machine in a small branch of Sainsburys Local I was in a couple of years ago as they had some problem with their card machines. It was quite interesting. Obviously neither of the two young sales assistants had ever seen this before but there was an older lady in charge who dug it out from under the counter along with the carbon paper chits and set it up whilst they looked on. The younger customers were equally nonplussed. Old gits like me were unfazed. The side effect was it took about two weeks for the payment to hit my account.

    Looks awful.

Like that paint they put on cars to hide the shapes etc. on them.

Already had it happen when in the USA... guy didn't check and so just handed me the paper to sign which just had the outline of the card showing. Did the right thing and pointed out that it hadn't picked up the card details and he'd have to enter them by hand and with the level of sigh I got from him about the inconvenience I wish I'd just signed it and walked away.

I would have signed it Micky mouse and then sold the car!  :D

If you read headforpoints there are a lot of superficial rich people who do care about what other people (including minimum wage shop cashiers) think about their card's appearance!
  • I'll take function over design any time... though the metal card will make a great scraper when things get icy.
