I personally think this is a hideous design, I'm also not a fan of the recent replacement Santander Debit card I received last week.

Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

I was in a restaurant last year and they had a power cut. They eventually brought out the old "click clack" machine to take an imprint. The funny thing being I had to show the waiter how to use it!
...or the opposite end on a Bic pen.   Anyway I was in a restaurant in Swanage many moons ago - the "click-clack" twanged the card into the air - and it seemed to vanish. The staff eventually found it in the washing up bowl  behind the bar!
Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!

On my Curve card, the name, long number and dates are printed on the reverse.  The days of taking a card imprint are well and truly over, which frees up the design opportunities of the card.
    Are they?!

Same here a couple of weeks ago at the take away caravan in a cafe car park - lost the connection to the wireless card machine so had the zip zap out - hadn't seen one for years.

Where's the long card number and all that stuff, is it all under that wee bit of paper?
On the back. Printed (not embossed)

Can those imprint slips not be filled in by hand?

It looks ugly. Was tempted to apply for the Santander Zero but think I’ll stick with my Halifax Clarity. Don’t understand why they made it so different from their red debit cards.

The café inside my local Tesco did that last year when their chip'n'PIN machine went down.

The transaction didn't appeared on my credit card bill.

Yes, both my AmEx and Virgin Atlantic card have the details on the back (except the AmEx security code which remains on the front. What amuses me mildly is when you interact with AmEx (phone or online) it does ask for the "long number on the front of the card" in a few places which makes me think that left and right hand should make friends.

They can be... the machine was just a short cut to save time and having to read handwriting.

Was in the USA when they got one out, blindly put the carbon paper in, ran over the card (with its numbers printed on the back) and then gave me the slip to sign having not noticed that it hadn't picked up the card details... was briefly in two minds on if to say anything or not (I did)

I actually like the new Santander debit one, the old one looked worn and faded as part of the design. I could never understand why it has a white worn mark in the middle as part of the design!

I do think we will see this sideways style design appearing on more and more cards, I also expect more metal cards as the main players try to outdo the new digital banks!
