The best account to switch is one that you already have, and that you don't mind, or that you want, to switch to Halifax.
If you do not have such an account, the next best option is that you try and get one. Word on the street is that it's easy and quick to open accounts with Monzo, Starling or Metro but see some earlier posts.2 -

no one can tell you which account you can switch out of, as its very subjective and no one would know what accounts you have. Switch takes care of anything so there is no preference in high street banks vs any app banking. You will have to check out which banks you dont use or dont need or not getting anything out of it. Switch process will move over everything and whatever you were doing with the previous bank will be able to do with Halifax.

If anyone else knows different....
Not sure what jen49's reading but, as colsten says in reply, what is being suggested is not what happens at all!
If you open a new Reward account with Halifax, and switch an external (not Halifax) account to it you will get the £100. It's as simple as that.
(as long as you haven't had a similar bonus from them since April 2018)
The query jen49 was replying to related to whether this could be done whilst logged in as an existing customer. To which the answer is almost certainly also a very simple yes.
Whether you are able to open a new Reward account if you already have one (i.e a second Reward account) is another matter entirely. And unrelated to whether or not you're logged in. But if you do have one already, Halifax won't be closing it if you open a new one. If they let you open a second one (i.e if their system lets you, despite the terms saying one Reward account per person) they are likely to downgrade one of them to an ordinary current account in due course. But that's not closing it.
What they will be closing - which might perhaps be the source of the confusion, is the account you're switching from. The switching scheme, by definition, closes the original account.

I could try to open another, but the terms do say only one sole Reward account - and the application may even trigger their system or a human into seeing the many accounts I hold and closing them!
Hopefully they will not charge me account fee if the account is downgraded before the fee becomes payable?“If you close your Ultimate Reward Current Accountor transfer it to another of our accounts, your final maintaining the account fee will be proportionate to the number of days from the last fee debit day to the date of closure or account change.“0 -
Thanks. Just opened Ultimate Reward and requested the switch which has switch date of 13 August. If it works all in good switch should be completed by next week plus £100 credit.
Will downgrade after.0 -

My HSBC regular saver comes out in 3 days and I’ve no reason to keep the account after that. I had intended streamlining my accounts, but I last had a Halifax bonus in 2016 and still have a Clarity card, so I might as well go for it.0
