Quick question - is light rum the white 'bicardi' stuff or is it similar the the brown 'navy rations' stuff? As you can see I don't know anything about rum :o

I've been hoping that someone would answer this as well as i'm hoping to make some of this at the weekend?

    Can anyone help ?

I'd say that light rum would indeed be something like Bacardi. The darker rums have a much more distinctive taste that might not do so well in mixers.

But then, being ex Navy, I wouldn't have anything to do with light rum AT ALL - so this is only a guess :)

On the subject of booze - what else can you have with gin other than tonic? I don't mind a bit of gin, but HATE tonic.

  • I have searched but I have not found so...

Anyone got a recipe for HM Eggnog? Not Advocaat etc...and preferably not involving whipping cream (cos I hate doing that and have no electric whisk). There are plenty of recipes on American sites but I don't know how to choose and wondered if an oldstlyer could recommend one?

I'm pretty sure we don't have any actual recipes posted, though there are some links to various eggnog recipe sites in the main OS Christmas Support thread (search it for advocaat it's easier) but we also have a long running make your own booze thread so I'm going to merge your question with it in the hopes that the alcoholi... er... enthusiasts among us will be able to help and, of course, it will mean that most of the HM booze recipes can be found in just one thread.

    :)

  • Have just found a very scary and ancient egg nog recipe which involves dissolving the shells in lemon juice over a period of four days, then adding your booze etc. Yuk!!!

  • :snow_laug Luckily for you lot I found a nice one where you don't need to whip cream OR drink eggshells...here goes:

Egg Nog (multiply quantities per person)

    1 fresh egg
    1-2 tsp sugar
    1/2 pint hot milk
    small pinch salt
drop vanilla essence or extract to taste

OPTIONAL add 2Tbsp booze if required(sherry is recommended here)

Method: Beat eggs and sugar very thoroughly, pour on the hot milk and whisk in flavourings
