I read the other thread that windows 10 av was enough on its own and didn’t need a separate av. so, is my version of windows 10 ok on its own?0

Windows built in AV is fine, occasional scans with Malwarebytes free are a good idea. What does the son use for his school work on the borrowed laptop, and was there anything the old disk he/you use. I made the incorrect assumption that it had Pro, not a problem as DoaM said

Agreed. OP has done a sterling job.
Could have done with some more guidance during the installation, but at least we can go back to tweak/turn off as many of the privacy issues as is possible.
e.g. It's quite likely she signed in with a Microsoft account, when likely a Local account sign-in would be preferred, amongst other things. We can also upgrade to Pro for a very few £. Home and it's forced updates isn't ideal.
I'll have dinner and come back to this later.1 -
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread, especially debitcardmayhem and TheRightOne. The kindness of strangers who willingly gave me their free time, knowledge, effort and patience. You have saved my PC from the scrap heap and saved me from having to purchase a new PC, which I didn't have the money for anyway.
I know that I have already taken up a lot of your time, but if possible, can we try and look at the hard drive? Its just while I have the borrowed laptop in case its needed for anything. And if the hard drive is dead, then I can just draw a line under it now.
My son mainly uses the PC for Microsoft word etc, internet, email and stuff on the school website. He also uses pc for gaming, occasionally fortnite but mainly Minecraft.

You no longer need the laptop. You have done all of the hard work.
Everything that we might want to do, can be done on the PC now, in your own time.
We can put up a guide and you can go through it when you have the time. Congratulations.1 -
First of all, click on the Start button and begin typing Disk Management. You'll be offered the option of "Create and format hard disk partitions". Click on that to see if the 3TB HDD is represented there.

That disk should be 3TB not 3GB you could always run seatools for windows, but it may be worth swapping the sata and power cables with the ones in the DVD drive

This thread is an absolutely superb example of what this website should be all about. With informed technical and patient input from the "experts" and the OP with the problem responding and acting on advice given. And all for the aim of helping a young person with their education!! Doesn't get much better than that

What about the initialise disk pop up?MRB or GPT?Or no difference at this point?0
