Thanks you I am doing this, the diagnostics say that the battery is coming to the end of its life - more and more I think that this should be scrapped.  I will try a bit longer.
The service tag is 40S6Q32 (I am not buy refurbished again)

Why not simply get a replacement battery pack? A 5th gen i5 with 8GB RAM is not going to be a slouch. Coupled with an SSD and that machine should see you through several more years.
  • The good news I did manage to create a USB drive that I can install windows from.
However when I try to I get these errors - any ideas?

You need to delete all the partitions, one by one, until you only get one line that says 'unallocated space", which is where the new Windows will go.

Will that change the boot from GPT to MBR ??
I use free Aomei Partition Assistant Standard to sort all that out .

GPT and MBR are partition structures that, by definition, come with the partition. If you delete all the partition, there is no GPT or MBR left.

I always start at the bottom and work up as the top one is usually the 'undeletable' one.
