British airways refund

  • I rang BA the day before I had been due to fly to the USA on the 19th March, only days after Trump had stopped flights . I finally got through on the phone and was only offered a voucher, even though I told them I was going to visit family members at university who would be home so would not be planning to go again. I was told they were not offering refunds and to take the voucher and if it changed later I could get a refund. I had to accept as I was scared I would lose everything if I didn’t get it sorted before the flight was due to go! I'd seen that other people have been getting refunds and contacted BA on Twitter and was told in no uncertain terms that once you have a voucher there is no refund. I tried to explain that I was told on the phone that he had made a note that I wanted a refund but the answer was still the same! I still have annual travel insurances but have been using this to try to get a refund on internal USA flights which is also proving very tricky!

Do you know if your flight took off?
The complication is that the flight was a 2 stop - from Manchester to Heathrow and Heathrow to San Francisco - The USA portion was cancelled but the Manchester to Heathrow went ahead as I understand.
You were clearly misled into taking a voucher being told you could get a refund later and a voucher was the only option.
This would certainly be grounds for a complaint,  and to get a refund you were told you could have.
The fact one leg didn't take off works in your favour.

Did you pay via credit card?

Yes I did use a credit card

Yes I did use a credit card
I would claim back via your credit card first Chargeback then  S75
It might take a long while, and the credit card company will probably reject your claim,  but don't be put off.
You can take it to the Ombudsman,  and they will take into account everything including on how you was misled into taking a voucher.

But if you don't want to keep the voucher, and BA won't give you a cash refund, then I see little other options.

Make a detailed record of the date you called, what was said etc while it's fresh in your memory  as you can submit that to the Ombudsman, if it has  to that far.

Hi, just a quick update. Asked for a refund on Monday, money back on card today. I am happy.
  • Just requested a refund for a flight leaving 31st July (booked back in February) and this has been declined. Any idea why? We definitely can’t travel on this date, whether the flight is cancelled or not, but looks like we fulfil the criteria for a refund based on the latest message on the BA website.

    Was this over the phone?

I just got a cancellation email for our flights on 28/6 to Turkey. I’m considering changing to September (and possibly a different destination) but one of our party can’t travel on our new dates so I’m wo feting whether I can just do a straight change online without losing the money paid for the 5th person, or if just calling for a refund then placing a new booking would be better..,

Have you tried making a new booking and seeing how much that costs,  to see if that or a refund is better?

  • I submitted a voucher refund online yesterday and received the decline online today but am clearly due one based on current website terms. Will try calling tomorrow.
  • I phoned yesterday afternoon to try to get a refund. My flights were return from LGW to Dalaman in Turkey, 28/6 to 12/7 for 5 people, and I received a cancellation email a few days earlier. I didn’t want vouchers, but when I tried to rebook online I just got a blank page on ‘manage my booking’

Anyway, I called yesterday (Saturday) around 3pm. Got straight through, spoke to a lovely woman who sounded to be in the north east. She confirmed my ID and the price I’d paid and said she’d sent me an email confirming cancellation and that the money would go back in my card in five days. That there would be two seperate payments, for the flights, and for the extra I’d paid to prebook seats. As soon as I got off the phone I checked my email, two refund confirmation emails showing the correct amounts had already arrived.

It was far easier than I expected, I was on the phone less than ten minutes in total.
