British airways refund

  • Hi all, I am looking for some help here please.  Earlier in the year we booked to go to Sydney on 20/04/20 before the Covid issue was even muted however as things went on it was clear we could not travel due to Australia placing a block on unnecessary travel into the country, I went on to the BA site and asked for a refund due to the travel restrictions and after going around in circles for some time and not being able to get through on the helpline I asked for a refund via e mail.  I was told I could only have a voucher and no refunds would be issued, this I reluctantly accepted not knowing I should have been legally entitled to a refund.  I called BA today and they have said you accepted a voucher so we can not refund you even though I did explain that I asked for a refund at the time but was told I could only have a voucher.  I am feeling bit more than slightly misled and that BA have been a bit unfair to say the least. Anyone else had the same issue and managed to get a refund after getting a voucher initially?

It seems to be the case that companies are washing their hands of people that have been given vouchers. Credit card companies and insurers both seem to be doing it as well. When did you first contact them?

had the flight been cancelled by BA before you requested your refund?
(the usual advice is to wait for the airline to cancel the flight to give entitlement to a refund, if the flight was still scheduled to operate when you cancelled then it would be whatever waiver BA had in place which likely would not have included a refund as an option)
  • i accepted ba vouchers as thought right thing to do and help.
my wife, me and a friend who we were treating following the death of her husband with Parkinson's were jointly travelling flight only to Spain.
i paid for the whole trip on my credit card.
i tried to book flights today to Spain next feb for me and family and use the vouchers. was told only could use mine and wifes as the other was awarded to our friend.
our friend will not fly and i bought it as a treat.
so in summary, my friend has voucher she does not want and did not pay for and i paid for trip and cannot get voucher awarded.
tried to do right thing ....never again
is this right, can this be done? thoughts?

We booked a round trip Newcastle to Tokyo via Heathrow. Flew out March 8th , returned March 26th 2020. Booked via Japan Air on a codeshare, BA did both flights outbound and the Heathrow - Newcastle leg on the 26th.
We were informed by JAL 5 days prior to our flight home that our HRW-NCL leg was cancelled ( 16.40 on the 26th ) and we were now booked on the 19.50 flight instead. Since I wasn't sure whether we could ( possibly ) claim for either the cancellation or the fact we were put on a flight 3 hours + later we went via Resolver.
Got a response today from Resolver - BA say flight cancelled due to low number of passengers due to Coronavirus so nothing due to us in the way of refund or vouchers. The flight we were on at 19.50 only had around 20 people on anyway!
Should I leave it there or do we have a case? Apologies if I posted on the wrong board, all this is very new to me.

So you did travel on the 19:50  LHR-NCL?   I guess you're trying to claim EC261 compensation for being delayed by more than 3 hours?  The EU have said that cancellations due to Coronavirus are exceptional circumstances, and therefore compensation is not due.

Look at it another way, in the middle of a global pandemic you were delayed by 3 hours on a long haul journey.  I'd chalk it up to experience and move on.

You should raise a complaint and request voucher re-issue or cash refund. If possible send proof of payment. And don't bother doing right thing, corporations won't care.
  • I had booked 5 return flights fromLHR to CPT leaving on Sat 21March. British Airways cancelled the flight home and then the flight out. On 19 March I managed to get through on the phone after waiting on hold for over an hour. I was promised a refund. 49 days later and 1 more phone call finally answered I am still waiting for my refund. Will I ever get it? I do not want vouchers.
