Old Style Weight Loss 2020 - Part 2

Roundtuit, I just knew that we were meant to be soul sisters. I also love language (you might have guessed) and the use of words fascinates me. I also love to trace words back to their origin and how English is made up of so many different languages. When I did A level English we did Chaucer in the original medieval language. I loved it.
Brambling, a few years after I'd left home, a colleague told me he was sad that I'd lost my lovely Hampshire accent. It was news to me that I'd ever had one.
I also love to hear not only regional expressions, but also family sayings. We have one in our family that intrigues people who have heard one of us use it for the first time. I have traced it back to a child somewhere in the past who was with a group of friends all boasting about the wonderful things in their houses. When it was this child's turn he couldn't think of anything to boast about and eventually came out with, "We've got steps up to our dustbin." Apparently this old metal dustbin was indeed on a sort of plinth, the only place for it in their tiny yard. Ever since then 'steps up to our dustinbin' has been family speak for someone trying to appear posher than they have any rightful claim to be.
Back to weight loss. So far today I have had toast and marmalade. What happens for the rest of the day depends on what I fancy, and when. Oh, the rapture of being able to write that.
Eat sensibly today children. And if you can't do that, superglue your lips together.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Monna - A good friend of mine who i met as a student and speaks proper BBC English (parents worked overseas so she went to boarding school) used to tease me, not unkindly about my accent etc when we first met at 18 until I took her home and my mum and two aunts were sitting around the table talking and they were farmers daughters so real Dorset country folk still living within walking distance of where they grew up. She had problems keeping track of the conversation
I say I've lost my accent but if I spend any length of time down there with my family some of it comes back
I enjoy listening to the Something Rhymes with Purple podcast with Giles Brandreth and Susie Dent but enjoying Chaucer Monna ?? I still have nightmares about translating it for A level we did both the Wife of Bath and the Prologue

Afternoon All,
I spent quite a while yesterday catching up with posts, keeping track of everything and then had a computer (okay, user) malfunction and lost the lot so who knows what I will or won't remember.
Hello jimali & greenbee, it's nice to have more people aboard. roundtuit, very well done on your loss, that's a really impressive restart!! Well done to all other losers / STSs. I don't remember seeing any gains but commiserations if there were any. I actually remembered to weigh myself yesterday morning, I just ran out of time to post as I was working all day and it was a ridiculously busy one, but was very shocked and incredibly happy that I can join the lost 1lb club this week.
jimali Well done on being so organised. Your menu sounds lovely so I might steal some of your plans, although I'll give the fish a miss.
monnagran Well done for sorting out your clothes. For someone whose wardrobes are full to bursting I also seem to have very little to wear. I can't believe you had to study Chaucer in the original medieval!! I love the "steps up to the dustbin" to describe someone who's a bit above themselves.
greenbee My summer clothes are still in their vacuum bag, on the floor in the spare room, and I'm taking stuff out as I need it and trying not to put my jumpers away until it's been emptied as I'm also worried about tempting the weather gods.
ditty After a 10K run in the morning you definitely deserved the alcohol and pancake
supersaver Mmmm, garlic bread. I use a ridiculous amount of garlic in most things that I cook but it definitely goes best with a lot of butter and bread.
Brambling I hope that you're getting used to your cushion and haven't fallen off your chair yet. I hope you get to enjoy some of your baked goodies as well as sharing them.
roundtuit I hope you're still enjoying your kitchen discos (there's nothing wrong with that word) and, even though you'd never tell from the drivel I type, I love language as well. There are a few books that I read over and over again just because they're so beautifully written.
Even though I've not got a particularly strong accent it's something I'd definitely be happy to lose - I grew up/still live in Essex...
I've not been dieting at all but following everyone's advice to enjoy what I eat definitely seems to be doing me good and I've eaten a lot less junk in the past week. I felt like baking this weekend so made some brownies and scones but have really savoured them rather than unthinkingly ploughing my way through them. I dropped some off to a couple of friends as well and spent about an hour having a chat, at an acceptable distance, in the front garden of one of them. It was so lovely to see her but it has highlighted just how much I miss people.
Best of luck and stay safe everyone xx7 -
Well done Izadora
I'm getting use the cushion and without it my dining room chair definitely feels uncomfortable i do feel a bit like a pea on a wobbly drum so I may have to deflate it a little
We have finished on time today so I'm off out to try and finish the gardening jobs I keep getting interrupted on (not that I'm minding that as they say it is good to talk)Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin7 -
Brambling, we did the Prologue and the Pardoner's Tale. You were lucky getting the Wife of Bath. She was a bit of a goer I believe. Couldn't tell you much about it now. Well, it was 63 years ago.
So glad you are enjoying the mindful eating Izadora. It seems to be working for me, though I'm still tweaking it. I'll let you know in due course.
Roundtuit, sooo, I removed Brahms 2nd symphony from the music centre (can't say record player, can I?) and replaced it with Chuck Berry. Chuck and I went Reelin' and Rockin' together in the kitchen. If I'm honest it was Chuck who did the Reelin' and Rockin' bit, I was more of the Swayin' and Jerkin' school of movement. But it shows willin' don't it?I believe that friends are quiet angels

Good evening everyone
Brambling thanks for maintaining the chart for all us, not a trivial task 💐
Izadora well done on joining the “1lb” club 👏
Well done, Bakers all, your bakes sound very tasty. 🧁🍰🎂🍩🍮🍪I find that as I get older I use more of the dialect or family words that I grew up with, especially when talking to my sister. Loving hearing about the Kitchen Discos, when I try dancing, the Canine Trip Hazards try to join in, so I don’t get very far. I just about manage a bit of Tai Chi (slower, so more time to see the hounds) We did The Knight’s Tale, and his Prologue, for our A-level Chaucer, it’s amazing that if you read the original aloud it’s more immediately understandable than reading it in your head (well, I found it so).

We did the Pardoner's Tale too @monnagran - you have my sympathies! I then went on to study medieval English at uni... (and medieval french & italian - as you can imagine, i'm not much use as a translator when I'm abroad
Too hot to eat properly. Salad is OK, but even that's a bit too much like hard work. However, the contents of the veg drawers say otherwise... so sauted veg with three eggs and some cream bunged in. I have a backlog of eggs and cream.7 -
I'm typing this from bed at 8pm as I'm shattered! Did lots of activity today - loads of housework, a workout, a dog walk and a bike ride. None of them very long but still. Food wise I've been pretty good ...
B: porridge with raspberries and blueberries
L: scrambled egg, smoked salmon and toast
S: apple, protein bar
T: fish tacos (which were amazing if I do say so myself. clean plates all round)
We are now out of fruit so I need to make a trip to Sains tomorrow I think. I'm loving having my meal planner filled in, no stressing about what to have!7 -
Brambling - do you really have nightmares about your A-levels? I thought that was just me!! 42 years after the event and I still have recurring nightmares about the blasted things. I too took A level English - and I seem to remember come Chaucer in there. Taking English Lit, French and German I had 17 texts to learn in three languages and I couldn't do it. Trying to set my panic attacks off - and it put me off reading for years and years. I then re-read a lot of the classics to enjoy them, not analyse and criticise, and my love of reading bloomed again.
monna - .swaying and jerking sounds good to me
Well, we may have fallen into this because we all want to lose weight - but it seems we have lots in common besides. I feel like I've come home and found sisters.

Hi could I join you please
I lost a lot of weight when knitwitch was organising the thread so quite a while ago. Sadly I put it all back on over time, but I've lost 15lb so far after a blood pressure scare so determined to get down to a healthy weight and it would be nice to have some company.
Could you put me down to lose 8lb please by the end of June, thank you xx
B- Dutch pancakes, berries, banana, yoghurt and maple syrup
L- Quorn nugget sandwich. Melon and grapes
D- Thai squash and pineapple curry. Half a hot cross bun
S- Raspberry ruffle bar, handful nuts, beetroot juice.
