Yes, that is why a cash refund is the best option.......who knows how prices will pan out for future holidays.

I think it's pretty clear on the TUI website.

If your holiday can no longer go ahead as planned, you’ll receive a refund credit for the full value of your holiday, and we’ll give you a separate booking incentive up to 20%. We understand that you may not be ready to book again just yet, so the refund credit gives you the flexibility to book your travel in future. Plus, if your original booking was for a package holiday, you’ll get a separate booking incentive up to 20%. You will receive a separate email four weeks from your original departure date with all the relevant information.

You get a refund credit for the amount you've already paid plus 'up to 20%' - according to the 2nd bit in bold.

You need to be aware that this 20% offer is valid for those holidays TUI have cancelled i.e. up to and including departures on 11th June.

There is a discussion up-thread about someone who was originally told they'd get the 20% but on rebooking they were told that they weren't eligible as their departure date was later than 11th June.

I have little doubt TUI have done this on purpose,  people thinking they have a deal getting the 20%  but finding out that it's all taken up with the price increase.
The trouble with a voucher is they now have a captive market.

Personally, I'd be happy if I could defer my holiday for a full year - everything exactly the same - for around the same price I've already paid for this year's holiday.

'Captive market' isn't an issue for me as the accommodation I've booked is tied to TUI. Very small 14 room apartment block in Greece.

Everybody's case is different.

People have to make the decision that feels right for them.

I totally agree, you pay your money you make your choice.
As TUI are sending out vouchers by default,  I'm  reading many want their money back in these testing times
They are looking for options and they will already know keeping the voucher is one option.
I haven't seen many posts stating TUI are wonderful giving an extra 20% (many more complain than give praise)

I've seen lots of valid complaints:

about delays getting refunds.

about the difficulty of getting in touch with TUI.

about being sent a refund credit when they actually want a refund (but once they get the refund credit they can ask for a refund).

Or are you reading that they want 25% extra. Or 30% extra. Or a free holiday?

To be clear here - I'm not saying TUI are wonderful.

I'm not even defending TUI.

I'm just giving my opinion on what I would be happy with when TUI announce that my specific holiday has been cancelled.

There was me thinking that people would check the price of the holiday next year before deciding to keep the voucher and use it and the 'up to20%' extra to pay for the holiday.

I've already priced my next year holiday up so I've got a good idea of what I'm looking at paying when I get my refund voucher.

Silly me to think everyone else would do the same.

Just because one person one person knows the best way of dealing with an issue it's dangerous  to assume that everyone does.
If everyone knew what to do and the best way of doing it, then this whole forum is pointless, as no one would need any help.

I've never travelled with TUI without discounts, for on-line booking, early booking, promotions etc, usually 2 separate ones given.  The long haul this year had 11% knocked of & a short haul for September has 15% off.

I can't get too excited about UP TO 20%.

Also a person may check for a price rise with TUI, but not all of them will check the cost of new travel insurance.
This may have gone up (seen a post on here by a large amount as had preconditions )  and no  Covid-19 cover.
